His drumming is understated and economical (not unlike Keith's guitaring), but very special IMO. Have you had a listen to the better Stones albums lately?

Beggars Banquet is my favorite.I like most of their 60's stuff and none after.

130As much as I love many of the rock (and non-rock) drummers mentioned in this thread, it turns out that capnreverb was right all along. I'm going to have to give this one to Elvin Jones.
My portable music playing device randomly shuffled to Duke Ellington and John Coltrane playing 'In A Sentimental Mood' this morning and almost stopped me in my tracks. An astonishingly simple and beautiful piece of music.
Someone once said about his drumming on this that it sounds like he's setting the kit up in the background and that's not a bad description, it's so loose and yet perfectly controlled. Of course, there's countless other recordings where he just smokes.
Elvin is #1 for me.
