It was a low point in here. He was too patient too long.
I had not been following the drama at the time because of poker. I posted that picture of me and it genuinely cheered steve up.

That was a wild time. But back then I was up for it as I was going through my edge lord phase. Clocker Bob, Mathew.... other people, baiting and bickering with them was my entertainment. Weirdly Mathew had a reverse Road to Damascus and went from raging Opus Dei conservative catholic to a reasonable guy. Bob... one of the weirdest things that ever happened here that wasn't sex pest dude was Bob's parallel anti PRF blog that he kept going for years after he was hounded out of the community.

I wrote a long response but it got deleted. Anyway:Crap. If you can't handle, say, janeways incomprehensible yet frequently amusing *and* "erotic" nonsense or that one (1!, it's rarely more simultaneously)

Anyway, this place *been* a safespace for people with certain values, tastes, aesthetics etc. Does that mean that it's ALWAYS a safespace? Of course not, I remember some rampant homophobia (using "gay" or "fag" as an insult here was something I noticed long before I joined and it was goofy; even *metal-archives*had a zero tolerance policy for that; at the same time, they needed it, PRF did not... we assume for some reason and it's like why? Irony?celebrated internet critic Mark Prindle once refered to admittedly lousy female US singer Pink as a "cum bucket" or something (no, I can't remember exactly but original review was brutal and while he deleted it, it has been saved elsewhere). Is it funny/Ok becase he happens to dig Jesus Lizard and Cows and we thus assume that he's coming from a "good place"? Meh, most attempts at this stuff has aged terribly as has much of this forum.

Honestly a lot of us grew up here. Something I’ve been retrospectively proud of myself for was never being actively homophobic, even as a teen. I never got it. That doesn’t mean I didn’t dissociatively use the expression “gay” in the 00s to denote something sucking. A phase I’d never use now.

But by and large this place has been a privilege to be a part of for almost half my life… on topic I don’t think I’ve go anyone on my foe list that’s still here. Janeway, is harmless and avoidable. I’m happy to disagree with people and have people disagree with me. I’d say everyone here is on the same page more or less. Just ignore people. Or foe them. But as for the rest of the internet… it’s a shitstorm best avoided.

A lot of times the foe list just seems to make people more obsessed with the person they're "ignoring" ("man, it's so great not seeing what X writes"). Outside of plain spam I've rarely found a reason to use it, and the one or two times I did seeing those hidden posts just made me more curious.

I don’t remember using the foe function that much but I started to after seeing a couple dudes posting some seriously gross shit and I don’t regret it. I think some fundamental disagreements are par for the course, and finger waggers annoy me just as anyone else, but it’s a mistake to think that people are getting blocked purely for the content of their opinions. Some people are just shitty.

There seems to be more hand-wringing over the idea of people using TFFL than there is actual use of TFFL. Looks like a non-issue to me.

The other thing that I don't think we're taking into consideration is the shift in the power-dynamics of online "life" during the storied history of the PRF. The validity and importance of what we say on the internet has now been accepted as something that wields as much power (if not more) as what we say IRL. But it wasn't always that way. The internet was a fringe pastime for freaks and weirdos, not moms posting pictures of their kids and defense secretaries launching missile strikes. You will have to excuse some of the elder members of remembering a time when this was just a distraction and you could literally say anything you wanted, and it was all anonymous and basically a stream of consciousness purging of our dumbest and most radical ideas, generally a lark, and understood as such. So living in a twitter-verse, and applying the same courtesy and deference as I would to a human interaction is still a bit alien to me.
