Every time I think of these, I'm really glad that the "Helix..." folks are out there.benadrian wrote: Wed Mar 30, 2022 3:54 pmI've been working for Line 6 for over 10 years now. In the process, I've also ended up working for Yamaha and Ampeg. I think it's only in the last few years that I've been able to rally show my full self in the products. I came out of the DIY punk and indie world, like everyone here on the PRF. We often love the harsh and absurd. FMSteve has made a life's body of work as a musician playing guitar through a PA speaker. That's a universal "wrong" in the guitar world. Sure, we're not all noise and chaos, but it's definitely part of this music community more than it is part of other communities.tommy wrote: Wed Mar 30, 2022 3:42 pm Also, that's a really great story. There are always going to be people that see some features as a bug.
And there's the DIY part. Many of us here are recording engineers, and we usually work in studios that we have built ourselves; cobbled together from great deals, used gear, and the discarded good of businesses who couldn't cut it. We don't have to worry about cutting it because we never wanted to be a business. We're losing money and having a blast.
So now I'm modeling my own gear, originally crafted for me and our community. I'm just inventing amps in the digital world that work. I'm trying to get the weirdo guitar players to embrace that there is fun and chaos in what had previously been thought of as perhaps gear that is "not for us." I was shocked to see Denison using a Helix as his pedalboard. Very pleased, but very shocked.
So yeah, I agree, I have a pretty great job.

122I don't know, at $950 and it's the J-wire version. I probably would if I was there. It's pretty easy to clean the buss bar if need be, or to replace the bushings if need be (I've done both. Took about an hour): https://synthchaser.com/product/sequent ... shing-set/ As long as none of the pots don't have busted shafts (doesn't appear to be missing any) and everything works, you're probably golden for a long time.TylerDeadPine wrote: Wed Mar 30, 2022 6:32 pmvery good point! 123This. ^
You may have to budget for maintenance, but at least it can be repaired!

Re: Gear talk: TALK ME OUT OF IT
124I was at a party and this dude had a collection of actual Gibson and Gibson inspired hollow body guitars. He handed me a Grote 335 and said they go for around $200, made in China deal. Played fine, could be solid with a little love.
I've had a hankering for a guitar in that fashion for a while and was thinking of souping up an Epi Dot or an Ibanez Art Core for a while, but this is potentially even cheaper. The pickups and possibly bridge will be quick to go on whatever I get. But the Grote would be a blind online purchase.
Bargain basement MIC guitar. Talk me out of it!

125hmmm, might be fine! I will say the cheap-ish Washburns I've played felt and sounded pretty good to me stock, even if they cost double the Grote.losthighway wrote: Thu Mar 31, 2022 8:31 am I was at a party and this dude had a collection of actual Gibson and Gibson inspired hollow body guitars. Re: Gear talk: TALK ME OUT OF IT
126if it's $200 new, you could find one even cheaper used. Low risk I'd say & could make a fun project. If it doesn't work, sell it and you're only out a little bit.
The only talk-me-out-of-it part for me would just be buying it sight-unseen w/out laying hands on it. Depending on your area, you might be able to find a similar hollow-body on Craigslist/FB Marketplace that you can actually play first.
Re: Gear talk: TALK ME OUT OF IT
127Oh, also Grote makes this which means you might get some of the germs on you and that's no good
Re: Gear talk: TALK ME OUT OF IT
128^ Wow.
Upon further reading a reviewer said the tuners were shit. That bumps the cost a little to be closer to used Epi/Ibanez territory. They also said the height adjustment screws on the pickups are fake(!). Just a little nail with a fake screw head.
Agreed, a low risk project if it can be found used for even cheaper.

Re: Gear talk: TALK ME OUT OF IT
129This is absolutely incredible to me. What a stupid/brilliant way to cut costs ever so slightly. Someone actually did the calculus to figure out that it was cheaper to make fake screws and hammer than to actually use screws. In fairness you have to assume that most people buying at that price point would never adjust pickup height anyway....losthighway wrote: Thu Mar 31, 2022 9:12 am They also said the height adjustment screws on the pickups are fake(!). Re: Gear talk: TALK ME OUT OF IT
130Yeah, I talked myself back into it, for a lot of what you said. And I don't mind analog problems vs. digital-turned-to-brick problems - checked this morning and the post was flagged, go figure.tommy wrote: Thu Mar 31, 2022 8:13 amI don't know, at $950 and it's the J-wire version.
