We'll be analyzing the social psychology of his appeal for decades. It's not hard to see how he draws in idiots, the trickier thing is explaining all of the otherwise intelligent people who didn't just pragmatically select him for certain political goals, but also have a genuine devotion to him. People who would punch him out at a bar if they didn't know him. People who'd shutter to have to deal with him at work.
