A few unsolicited suggestions:
SecondEdition wrote:Die Kreuzen - get the first album
DRI - might want to avoid 'Crossover' on...
Bon Scott-era AC/DC...this is really awful, especially since I love the songs from that era that I've heard...couldn't name any of them, though...this is so unbelievably embarrassing to admit... - don't worry; you know what they sound like.
Didjits - gotta see it live
The Cure - Mr. Smith doesn't remember recording 'Pornography'...
Fugazi - get, and enjoy
Youth Brigade - first LP
DOA - pretty stock sounding now. Good, though...
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (I love, love, love The Birthday Party but never got hugely interested in these guys...bad call?) - good call
Nomeansno - pretty fantastic
Tom Waits - lots of good, lots of bad

Wow. I am truly fucking ignorant.

No, you're not. It's impossible to know everything out there...the glass only holds so much water. Some glasses are larger than others, and some aren't full yet. Don't get jaded before you fill up.

Sorry about the sermon...pot.

Beefheart's a weird one to get into. I heard Trout Mask first and hated it then a mate urged me to listen to Safe As Milk and Strictly Personal both of which I loved. When I went back to Trout Mask I found I loved it a lot more and had at least respect for his other albums. Except for Unconditionally Guaranteed and Bluejeans and Moonbeams. Those two still suck.

Also whoever said they hadn't heard Ginger Baker's Air Force I urge you to keep it that way for your own sake. It's everything that was bad about Cream x1000.

Another thread on here made me realise I am totally ignorant to Grand Funk Railroad (most likely cos they never had the impact in the UK that they did in the US). I really should give them a listen one day soon. Any suggestions on where to start?

See, I usually like that kind of feeling too...but I felt like they - or rather, the singer - was sneering and laughing at me the entire time, and I just didn't like the feeling. I know that's a weird feeling to get because it's pretty much an exchange of dialogue between two characters, but it's true.

I find this really strange considering your avatar... you should love Killdozer, as they are pretty much a slowed down Cows (except I think the Cows came after the dozer) songs about people going now-where, that have a sad but funny bend to them... they are really an album band, as they tend to hit a groove and just nail you into the ground with it... esp live...

I know nothing about the Meatmen, even though every fanzine I read from the 80s has an article by/about Tesco Vee. I've heard such a variety of things about them that I don't know if it's really worth it to look them up.

I also know nothing about Negative Approach, which is weird, because I love the Laughing Hyenas. Even though those two bands share nothing in common except the lead singer, I should probably know more about the band John Brannon is most famous for.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Kind of funny... I don't think Killdozer sounds much like the Cows, and I love both bands... Killdozer has a real emphasis on slowing shit down, sludge, a basic guitar-bass blues combo slowed down. The Cows are not only faster, but a lot more erratic (but I'm a fan, so I probably hear a bunch of stuff in there that's, oh i don't know, not really there...)

Well worth checking out man! Only got into them recently after seeing them (or a radically altered version) at ATP. Probably the most hardcore of the 80's hardcore bands I've ever heard. Their first record pummels Black Flag's 'Damaged' in intensity but doesn't quite have the riffs / tunes. Still great stuff though.

I am a huge fan of both, both took influence from the good aspects of classic rock esp the guitars, and some of the subject matter, both had repetitive rythem sections that held the songs together... and both singers had a slightly affected deliverys that centered on dark humor...

Man I love both these bands...
