i hate mentioning a shellac album because this is steve's messageboard but it is recorded really really well. i also really like his work with the forms.

i really love the drum sound on new pornographer's 'twin cinema'. that has to be my absolute favorite drum sound of all time and i'd love for someone to explain how that clear-yet-hollow-and-boomy drum sound is achieved.

i also really like the production on at the drive-in's 'relationship of command', i like the early work matt bayles did on kill sadie's 'experiments in expectation', i like whoever recorded cavein's 'jupiter'. i also love the way unwound's 'leaves turn inside you' is recorded.

Off the top of my head:

Rashanim - Shalosh. Recording/Mix Translation by Bill Laswell and Jamie Saft. The production is the icing on the cake for really awesome music.
Same for Cheer-Accident's Introducing Lemon and What Sequel?.
Medeski Martin and Wood - Farmer's Reserve. Makes stereo seem like surround sound.
On the same lines: Art Ensemble of Chicago - Sirius Calling.

Willy Mason - Where the Humans Eat. Probably live in the studio. Whatever they did to that snare drum, it sounds great.

I thought I'd posted on this thread. SHOWS WHAT I KNOW. In addition to what other folks have said, which I mostly agree with, I'd like to add:

Ry Cooder - Chicken Skin Music
JJ Cale - 5
Donald Caballero - American Donald
Super Furry Animals - Rings Around The World (The multi channel disc of this is immense)
The Meters - Look-Ka Py Py

There are many more records that I think sound great, but I have to make dinner.

Pink Floyd - The Wall
Tom Waits - Mule Variations
Jan Johansson - Jazz På Svenska
Einstürzende Neubauten - Perpetuum Mobile

Of Steve's work I find the new Weedeater to sound supreme.
I think he just über nailed the sound on that record.
