Spent the last month building a bunch of modules for my friend and I. The white panels (nonlinearcircuits) are all SMD, which can be a bit challenging to do by hand. His stuff:My stuff:Next modules I build will use panels of my own design, since I haven't done that for a while. I prefer designing my own panels, but it's hard to beat the value of buying panels that were made in batches.

How much?I was thinking around $550.bassdriver wrote:Nate Dort wrote:I came out of retirement for a few minutes and did one last PM1000 rack job with parts that I had in my stash. This gave me the confidence to start the Weber Champ kit that's been collecting dust for a few months now, the board is now populated and hope to finish wiring and assembly later this week.NICE!THANKS! IT WORKS.

Is there any one stop shop kind of place where I can get all (or most) parts needed to build an amp head from the ground up?Short answer: No.There might be one but you'd have to work around a lot of constraints such as: working your build into a pre-punched chassis that isnt so ideal, paying more for certain parts than you have to, dealing with a limited selection. I cant tell you right out that if you;re trying to do a Sunn S100 proper, no one is gonna have UL transformers AND all the other stuff you need. I generally break my builds up into these suppliers:CEDist/Antique Electronic Supply - good source for a lot of amp-related parts like tubes, boards, pots, switches, some iron etc. You can get most of what you need here, if not all at times.Mouser - i use for whatever im not getting at CEDist component-wise. Resistors, some caps, they have the lamps i like...etcWatts Tube Audio - chassis. these guys are the only place I know of that makes a good blank chassis in multiple sizes.Iron - if I need transformers that I cant get from CEDist, I generally go to either Magnetic Components or Edcor. Both make quality stuff, MagComp is more geared toward existing amps (i.e. replacement for BF Princeton, etc.) and Edcor has about everything you'll need, but its all made to order so it takes like 4-6 weeks. Side note, all Edcor output transformers have UL taps.Faceplate - use who you like or write it on with sharpie! I use one place in Indiana, oddly enough.

FWIW, I started with a kit and my first few builds were from kits. Sometimes I even bought one kit with the intent of making it into something completely different just because then i knew i was getting all the small parts that went along with it and i didnt have to source those. You'll forget something like grommets, nuts and bolts, standoffs, etc. Having a kit, or the BOM from a kit helps you make sure youve got everything.

How wonderful is it to have people like Doc Balls, Nate Dort, DFTR, benadrian, and many others, willing to share years of experience with newbies and enthusiasts. For serious. This place is a wonderland resource.
