Yeah, this is a pretty common one. It's the sort of thing I was looking for when starting this thread.
-Person hears other people using the term "moot point."
-Person is totally unfamiliar with the word "moot." Has never seen it written down.
-Person believes he/she is hearing people say "mute point." They are able to believe this because replacing "moot" with "mute" almost conveys the same meaning, although it really doesn't, but you end up with something that almost makes sense.
At the heart of most malapropisms is a person who is comfortable saying things they don't understand.
Or who maybe have developed an alternate universe of meanings. A universe where some purposes are intense, and others aren't as intense, and for all intense purposes, it's a mute point.
