SacredAndProfane wrote:Ches is probably on there too...he's one of the most diverse drummers I've ever seen. From Theory of Ruin, to Trevor Dunn's Trio Convulsant, Secret Chiefs 3, The Night Porter...I mean, the list goes on and on. He teaches in Berkeley, if anyone's interested.

A few nights ago I watched Ches rule it with 7 Year Rabbit Cycle (Deerhoof founder Rob Fisk's band).

Ches is an inspiring musician.

Definitely. Ches has established himself within my top 3 without a doubt. If any of you L.A. people want to see a fucking amazing show go to this:

January, 11 2007 at The Smell
247 So. Main Street, Los Angeles, 90012
Cost : $5

David Scott Stone/Ches Smith (That will be DSS's first time playing with Ches)
Plethora Yearned (Nels Cline, Woody Alpanap, Jeremy Drake and Ches Smith)
Mary Halvorson And Jessica Pavone (NYC)
Thruster (Seattle/Los Angeles)

Also, if you're in the bay area, check out DOS (Kira & Mike Watt) w/ Good for Cows (one of Ches' other bands), February 17, 9:30pm @ The Hemlock.

Amen to that.

I'm a huge fan of the first incarnation of Today is the Day. Brad Elrod who was the drummer on the first three LP's (particularly Willpower) is out of control in a good way.

Brann smokes, no doubt, but I encountered Brad first so I'm a little stuck on his playing (besides, from what I understand, at the time there were loads of young kids in Nashville trying to play like Brad which gave Steve Austin an endless run of good drummers that sounded like his original one) I'd love to know what happened to Brad. Nicest fucking guy in the universe.

To many of the fine selections above, I'd add Jim McPherson's superlative work with the Breeders/Amps. Elucidate more I cannot.

Jimmy Mac rules! Helluva guy.

He's on some good solo Pollard as well.

Kuba Suchar from Robotobibok (http://www.robot.futuro.info.pl/indexopt.html). I'd put this man up against Damon Che no question. One of the best drummers I've seen/heard so far

Frank Beard (who, ironically, doesn't have a beard like the other two) from ZZ Top on Tejas. Man, what a great record!

Oh man, I'm a dick for not thinking about this one. Tejas is one of the greatest records I've ever heard with one of the greatest rhythm sections of all time. For those who are interested....steer very clear of the remixed, remastered version of that LP. They completely ruined it.

XXX and Rhythmeen are insanely overlooked, more recent Top LP's. Both are stellar. Stellar I tell you. Reverend Billy Gibbons' guitar tone on those LP's is to die for.
