I've never been into Sonic Youth, but I had the occasion to see them live twice, and both times they were fantastic. The first time was in the sweet spot between Social Distortion and Neil Young & Crazy Horse on the Ragged Glory tour; the second time was with Dinosaur, Jr. at UMASS. For the encore, J. Mascis joined Sonic Youth to play Minor Threat's "Stand Up."

Now that's not fair. He enjoys many bands, such as The Jesus Lizard, and The Ex, and.....

I wish I could of seen SY open on the Ragged tour, I've heard they were pretty great shows. Someone who did see them then told me SY kind of pissed off the old Neil fans with their set but then Neil came out did played even louder and crazier than Sonic Youth.

They were so fucking great on the Seattle show on this tour. Unbelievably, jaw-droppingly great. They played a bunch of old stuff, and improbably it translated perfectly into this alternate-universe arena rock.

It was marvelous. Neil and CH were good, but actually a bit of a letdown. I would never, ever want to go on after someone setting it on fire like that.

The first time I saw them was at Metro in Chicago in 1987. Awesome show. There's a good bootleg of it, actually--it's called Hold That Tiger.

six finger satellite, steve's bands, zeppelin, the ramones, um...hell. one thing i tell people is that i only listen to like a dozen bands. another thing i tell people is that i hate music because that's actually closer to the truth.

see, the issue is a lot of bands i'd like more if their catalogs weren't so spotty, so it makes it hard for me to like a band entirely. one good record, maybe a couple good songs, that's not going to win me over anymore. particularly when you consider the amount of music out there. granted, most of it's shit, but you think the atmosphere would have gotten more competitive, people trying to do their best as opposed to just doing whatever. i'm not saying that's how everyone is, it's just what i hear. a billion ideas half thought out, shit cobbled together, just half assed.

then on top of that, most music isn't really all that creative. drummers still play typical beats, bands still write typical arrangements, and i'm just getting bored with it. i want people to push boundaries harder. that's in fact the reason i left my last band. well, one of several.

finally, our tastes change as time goes on, we age, we grow, i can't defend a lot of the things i used to like. i've outgrown them. i don't need them anymore. how i feel about some music has just changed entirely, i don't think it's good anymore. used to like the pixies. used to like mudhoney. used to like mission of burma. used to like archers of loaf. now, i think those four bands all have some decent to fucking great songs. sometimes i still listen to those songs. i don't choose to sit through any of their albums anymore. burma lost me at the reunion anyway. mudhoney put me to sleep with "since we've become..." the pixies...that only lasted a year, same with archers.

i don't listen to much music anymore. not like i used to. i still will buy an album, download an album, a friend is constantly sending me songs in my email, i listen to them. i've heard a helluva lot of the prf's music and music recommended by the prf. i've just called a moratorium on it for right now, i'm working on a new band and i'm trying to create a lot of it from the ground up without any outside input from what i'm listening to now.

anyways...yeah, i only like about 12 bands.

oh, and nirvana is the very definition of over rated. i can't explain their success.
buy my guitar. now with pictures!

It worked for Scott Stapp.

I kid, I kid.

I understand what you're saying. I've felt the same way about music in general for a few months. I only have a few artists that I really listen to; everything is is just diegetic static.
