To be fair, I only really have ever spent time with 1 AC30 for more than a few minutes. This particular one sounded weedy at low volumes but sounded great cranked through a Hot Plate. I am really no reliable narrator on the subject.
Re: Generic Gear Opinion Request Thread
132HD130 owner here. This is a great amp that does what a “good” twin reverb can do, and the master volume can be used really effectively with the preamp volume for a nice internal overdrive. It’s pretty quiet too which is a nice bonus. Nice versatile amp with plenty of power if you need.
That said, it is a LOT louder than an AC15 and doesn’t have that musical sag that the AC style amps have. If that’s a quality you dig in the AC15, you may want to avoid the HD130

133Those Music Man amps have a solid state preamp section, right? I would think that would make for a substantially different sound than a Vox style circuit. Not that there's anything wrong with that of course! Peavey amps like the Classic, Duce, and Mace did the same hybrid thing and those amps can be had for very little. That is a good price on the HD130, but as others have pointed out, it's probably gonna need a little (or a lot of) TLC. I've seen those Peaveys go for like 200 bucks over the past couple years. They typically have good speakers, and even if you do have to get it recapped or replace some tubes it's still a coming in at a bargain. Which is nice if you just want to try an amp for a while to see how it works for you without having to commit to a major investment.

134The AC circuit is probably better for the cranked combo thing, but after hearing so much about the Vox 'chime' and then playing through a few I still think (non tweed) Fender style amps are better at that sound.Kniferide wrote: Thu Feb 10, 2022 5:10 pmTo be fair, I only really have ever spent time with 1 AC30 for more than a few minutes. 135The Peavey 70s-80s Classic and the Deuce and Mace are cool amps. They resemble Music Man amps as noted above. The ones with the tremolo instead of phaser have some weird preamp features so you can cascade the channels and get a fart sound, but if you don’t do that, they’re fine. I wouldn’t pay more than $250 for one.
If you’re not trying to stay in the Vox ballpark sonically, I’d try out one of those if you can, or a Music Man, and also see what you think of a Pro Reverb or Bandmaster Reverb+cab, and then maybe a 6L6 Ampeg Gemini for another contrasting tone. These are often cheaper than the smaller Reverberocket and bigger VT series, and maybe a bit more portable than the latter.
Edit: the later (90s-today) EL84 based Peavey Classic is not a bad amp either, although the Peavey company as it currently exists is very bad. Fight Amp used the tweed Classic 100, I’m pretty sure. It has like 8 or 12 EL84s or something.

136Anyone use a looper pedal? I want something simple for the typewriter band, but also to mess around with some more traditional stuff with guitar. Seems like a minute or two sampling is more than enough, and song storage might be nice but not a dealbreaker. I can do real recording on my daw- this would just be writing and performance use.
Looking at the Boss RV-1 and RV-5 which are about $115 and $230. Down with other suggestions too. The boss ones seem to have a useful clock like countdown display, and the footswitches are super familiar and work well.

137I haven't used it for actual live looping, just triggering pre-recorded stuff, but I like the RV5 quite a bit for that, especially w/ the FS7 switch so you've got some more selecting opportunities on the fly.
Coincidentally I'm selling both if you're interested and end up going that route!

139Hey I ended up getting this, it sounds rad. Will have a technician check it out to make sure it's all well and good. Thanks for the feedback folks!zircona1 wrote: Thu Feb 10, 2022 2:51 pmWould this be the kind of Music Man model that would be an upgrade from my Vox AC15? And is this a good price?penningtron wrote: Mon Feb 07, 2022 8:15 amThe obvious choice used to be Music Man combos, but they kinda shot up in price a few years ago. Maybe you'll get lucky tho.zircona1 wrote: I'm looking to upgrade my amp. Right now I have a Vox AC15 that's fine, I bought it used years ago, but I'd like to upgrade to something bigger and louder.

140Perhaps this is more of a “small question that doesn’t fit anywhere,” but I’d be curious to know the PRF’s thoughts—especially those of the luthiery-minded denizens of the PRF—regarding this 12-string conversion technique:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/280779246124
I inquired with the purveyor years ago about whether he could perform this conversion on any guitar (e.g. on a guitar sent to him), and he said that he could and would. I’ve always had that kicking around in the back of my head as I perennially search for a 12-string that I like. But I’ve never quite overcome my concerns regarding inadequate fretboard width and the prospect of the guitar being uncomfortably neck-heavy.
So, again, I’m just curious to hear others’ thoughts: does this conversion approach appear sound?
