Semi-related: Imaginal Disk by Magdalena Bay stands out to me, even in a year that's overflowing with female-fronted dance pop bangers. It's a really well-done narrative concept album. Almost all the songs call back and forward to each other melodically and lyrically. The story (being implanted with a new identity like inserting a CD) is present, but it never overpowers and verges into schmaltzy roadshow musical territory, which to me is the curse of most concept albums that tell a story. I get that the disco-electro-funk aesthetic and high-register voice will be a dealbreaker for a lot of people, though.

Up there with my favorites of the year...just no way to classify what Kris Davis (and lots of the Pyroclastic crew) does, but it's consistently excellent
