We'll be analyzing the social psychology of his appeal for decades. It's not hard to see how he draws in idiots, the trickier thing is explaining all of the otherwise intelligent people who didn't just pragmatically select him for certain political goals, but also have a genuine devotion to him. People who would punch him out at a bar if they didn't know him. People who'd shutter to have to deal with him at work.
I honestly don't think it's that complicated: racism + celebrity worship.

Devotion lets them off the hook. I could forgive actual devotion. I don't think most people in elected office are actually devoted to Trump. Maybe MTG and a few others are/were. Most are simply using him to get what they want.
i don't even think most people in the white house are loyal to trump (except hegseth, miller and noem).

The irony runs over w/this administration.

Trump's corruption, political and financial conflicts of interest, antiregulatory stance on the environment and big business, increased federal powers, hostility towards social services, and policies that support a widening wealth gap take the USA in a direction that gets closer and closer to many of the countries from which he seeks to bar immigrants and to which he wants to deport people. All of the above reminds me a hell of a lot more of factors that complicate workaday existence in Mexico or Morocco than in say, Trump's beloved Norway.

I wasn't one of those people who went all-in on "Trump had himself shot" even though that whole thing was weird... BUT IF I WAS and I read this, my head might explode:

“I don’t think about her. I think she’s a fraud,” Trump told ABC News. “She probably had herself sprayed, knowing her.”

That is really the first thing that comes to his mind?
Much has already been said about projection, accusation, confession, etc...
