The Spice Girls of gallery openings.
Yea, exactly. Way to listen with your eyes.
I was never fanatical about their other stuff although I always liked the lady's voice. There are actually some great tunes on this new album. Very different but i wish they had taken their new approach further. A friend of mine compares them to the Melvins saying that they both don't so much write songs as they take you on this long ride. That is what this new Portishead stuff does for me. I wish the ride were a bit longer and more twisted.

This is formulaic?
Life...life...I know it's got its ups and downs.

135It's their formula, yeah, but it's a formula. They drift from it, but the template of the moany broad and the ghostly beats and the monotonous bass is pretty solid.
I can see how if you're into moody club music you might think it was awesome. There's this guy called Burial you should check out...

136Steve, Check this one out then I will shut up:

What I see is a tight, wierd, creepy rock band jamming the fuck out on some wild, interesting shit.
This shit right here to me is just as intense and scary as anything Sonic Youth ever did in their good years...and it just came out, on a major.
The second song on the video to me is a really nice, well written dark low key melodic rock song. Tell me why this is not true.
I understand people have problems with their earlier shit with the big trip hop beats and DJ scratching but this new stuff is nothing like that stuff at all. It's the same singer singing in the same style, that's about it. As far as a 'formula' goes they've gotten about as far away from their old one as I can imagine a band could.
Yeah, that song is pretty crappy in all actuality. I do admire the fact it's a real bizarre choice for a first single from this record which has several way more obvious choices on it such as this Nico/Velvets sounding number:

137I go back and forth with her as a singer. Sometimes I dig the whole moody spooky thing, but I can hear how this is responsible for the kind of stuff CocoRosie churns out, and I hate that "band" as much as the next guy . . .
The new record, Third is pretty drastically different from their '90s stuff (which I can just barely tolerate, because it's at least unique boring "trip-hop" or whatever), which is why I like it a bit more. They threw a bunch of post-punk into the mix, so I find it a little more intriguing and engaging. I find that brand of guitar fuckery pretty difficult to resist. But it's definitely Portishead, and I have to agree that there is a pretty obvious formula. Boring, but certainly better than Dummy, one of the more aptly titled albums of the '90s.
