In a distant time FM Zom Zom once stated that Prince's version of funk sounds anemic. I'm not 100% sure if he used "anemic" but it was something like that: miniscule, skeletal, maybe even "lite." It's an astute observation, but he uses it as a criticism whereas I embraced it as a compliment. Prince's funk is anemic, skeletal, brittle, and that's what makes it unique. I mean, really, he dropped a single in the freakin' 80's devoid of bass. Hearing "When Doves Cry" for the very first time was startling. He created a singular style of funk and spread it across numerous projects without making any of them obsolete or sound monochromatic.
The breakdown/outro/coda/whatever to "Mountains" is dazzling.

Unwound announced a couple of East Coast shows for next March. One of them is 3/20 in Atlanta. Mclusky are also playing ATL that night.
I don't live in ATL, but that would be a hard decision to make.

I don't know how well does Mclusky usually perform live, I read Unwound can be hit or miss... but judging from their records the obvious choice has to be Unwound.
Mclusky are perfectly fine but come on.

Yeah McLusky made one good album and maybe a few decent songs beyond that. Kinda surprising they've been able to get a couple tours out of that.
(edit: oh right, one was called off/postponed due to hearing issues)

Have seen 2 interesting weirdo results of 2 bands / same night things thru the years.
Wire was doing their reunion think back in the early 00's, the Read and Burn stuff, and wound up booked the same night as Interpolwho was very hip and playing a different venue the same night. I was living in Dallas, and went down to see Wire. For whatever reason, Wire played an earlier set so everyone could go see Interpol. It was kinda confusing, really, but I saw both shows somehow. I don't remember planning on seeing Interpol, and would have easily chosen Wire over Interpol, of course.
Blonde Redhead and The Fall were listed as co headlining a show at Trees here in Dallas, a great place where I've seen lotsa cool stuff thru the years. It seemed a really weird bill to me, and I saw nowhere else that they played together. Friend of a friend said they accidentally got double booked and each had some kind of guarantee or whatever so BRH somehow wound up as the first band. Whatever, I wanted to see both so lucky me. Get to the show and there were signs that said BRH had requested no smoking, which you still could inside back then. BRH came out, did their thing, was great like always, and all the young hipsters left as soon as they were done.
The Fall came out, MES chain smoked the whole show and fucking rocked our faces off. They were so good, and even though he was mostly performing from an armchair, MES was still amazing and mesmerizing. All the cool kids missed out.

Unwound are playing Big Ears in Knoxville next March as well. I already bought a pass, so I'll see them there.
I usually drive to Knoxville the day before the fest starts from St. Louis, am pondering going to Atlanta first for the Mclusky show, spending the night, and then on to Knoxville the next morning (ATL-Knoxville is a little over 3 hrs).

I don't think the current iteration of Unwound suffers this inconsistency. I've seen 3 of the reunion shows, and they've been fantastic.
Obv Vern is missed - I saw the OG Unwound several times - Vern and Sara were who I locked into. Vern was a very visceral player and integral to the performance, but they were always on when I saw them. I can see him having an off night and the show being pretty bad as a result. There are stories throughout the box set liners about that.

I tend to prefer no lyrics or at least very few.

Someone should make air freshener that smells like Brut after shave.

"It's My Life" by Bon Jovi sounds like it was intended to be sung by Britney Spears.
