Sunderland now just 6 points behind toon. I've got a £5 bet with my sister that Sunderland'll finish higher than Newcastle. Keegan or no Keegan, I think we'll do it.

Maybe I missed a meeting, but when was it decided that Kevin Keegan is any good at managing football teams? I thought it was generally accepted that he was a spineless clown who has failed in every management job he has had?

I think they should consider either Martin Jol, Sparky Hughes or Steve Coppell.

I'd like to see how Coppell fared with some cash at his disposal.

Unless all the Keegan or Shearer stuff is just press hype (which it probably is) NUFC look like they're looking for "the next chapter in the myth" rather than a decent manager. Then again, given Mike Ashley's "I'm a man of the people/a fan just like you" efforts, maybe one of those two is what they'll end up with.

He's a legend on Tyneside, as you might of guessed. He took Newcastle from the brink of relegation into the old division three and took us four points away from winning the premier league.

He failed at the England job, but so have many others.

Personally, there are no other decent managers available who are willing to take on the job. It's really either a Daglish/Souness/Allardyce type appointment, i.e. Mark Hughes, Steve Bruce, or give Shearer and/or Keegan a chance. After all, Shearer could be a really fucking good manager.

Both Keegan and Shearer would receive a good portion of support from the fans and thus would be given the 3 or 4 years stability needed. Also, Shearer, if not appointed, would cast a shadow over whoever got the job until he is given a chance.

That would be like Leeds taking Howard Wilkinson back. He is rightly recognised as a legend for, similarly, taking Leeds from the brink of Division Three to the Football League Championship, and laying the foundations for later success. However it is recognised that the later years of his reign were absolute insanity, and nobody would suggest having him back.

I think there is something to your idea that Keegan and/or Shearer would at least be given the time to stabilise the club; but I wouldn't want to count on Keegan to actually stick it as long as they fans may be willing to let him. He does not cope well with the tough situations, Kev. Shearer on his own may be a better idea, but it's a gamble. Great striker as he was, as a manager it is impossible to say whether he'd be good or utter shit. And after Saturday's debacle, I don't think he has the luxury of being able to learn on the job.

And I'm sorry about the O'Leary thing... that was just cruel.
