Mogollar play rock & roll with traditional Turkish instruments. Some of their stuff tends toward a "prog" kind of sound. In in this archive are the records Danses et Rhythmes de la Turquie and Düm-Tek.

Red Elite is a 3-man band from Toronto who were called Puddy when they were a 4-piece. Strong Quicksand-ish sound, but with a bit of swing and more menace.

Puddy was one of my favorite bands of the past several years and Red Elite do a pretty good job of carrying the banner. Unfortunately, I have no idea if they're still together. They may be on hiatus.

Nekropsi is a Turkish experimental/progressive rock band. This album is a bit heavy on the time-delay effects for my taste, but their musicianship is excellent and they do some interesting things here and there, so it's well worth giving a listen to.

Bastro - Sing The Troubled Beast



This is the 3rd and final record by Bastro, the band formed by David Grubbs of Squirrel Bait, before he went on to play with Jim O'Rourke in Gastr Del Sol. IMO, this is Bastro's best record, more complex and listenable than their earlier stuff.

This is a rip of the original CD, not the Drag City reissue incorporated with Diablo Guapo.

Ink & Dagger - The Fine Art Of Original Sin



Ink & Dagger were a Philadelphia post-hardcore band from the mid-late '90s. They were known for their theatrical, vampire-themed stage performances, complete with fake blood and monster makeup. Alhough this may seem a bit trite and silly (it was), their quirky and modular approach to songwriting did occasionally produce some interesting music.

The Fine Art Of Original Sin was Ink & Dagger's final release, and it is actually a pretty good album throughout. Complex, quickshifting rhythms and novel bass lines plow through loosely woven guitar noise, and it all seems to fall together nicely. The only real gripe I have with this band is the vocals. They tend to be squawky and off-key, they sometimes interfere with the guitars and can be quite distracting. However, there's plenty of goodness here to make this album worth a listen.
