The first thing that comes to mind is the heater current draw. 6L6GC's draw 0.9A of heater current per tube. 6550's draw 1.6A each, as do KT88's. So right there, you're talking about a 78% increase in the heater current draw, which in some amps you might be fine with, and in other amps, you might blow the heater tap on your power transformer.

The thing is, EL34's are also 1.6A per heater, so in this respect (heater current draw) amps that use EL34's can use 6550's can use KT88's and vice-versa. Likewise, amps that use EL34's can use 6L6's. But not all amps that run 6L6's can use EL34's, 6550's, or KT88's.

Blowing your power transformer is totally not fun. Nor is it cheap. Even if you can put in a new PT by yourself, you're still talking about a good chunk of change (about $100, give or take $50) and a bunch of time to find the right one, order it, get it, take out the old one, put in the new one, etc etc.

Ampeg V4-B. You know all about these. Best sounding bass amp I've ever played. I'm running it with 6550's right now. After taking it to the same local repair guy twice and he same issue kept repeating, one of my friends got into working condition. Replaced the caps, and resoddered a resistor that kept coming loose. Thanks Adam!

Gallien Kruger 400rb. My go to bass amp for years. You can dial in pretty much any sound you want. It has never once failed on me, and I've played through it for a couple hundred shows, countless hours of practice and recording projects. Now that my V4 is back in action, it'll be used as a back up or when I can't fit the fucking V4 in my Honda Civic with all of our other gear.

currently:

amps I use for gtr:

1977 HIWATT dr103 wonderful amp now that I have it working.

Generic birch 4X12 from 1994? loaded with various flavors of Celestion Speakers, half open back, with casters. Black tolex. Dust. Cat Hair.

Traynor YBA-1A from 1972 (used with same cabinet as above)
Cigarette burns on tolex top from Canadian Rush Cover Band. Excellent amp.

Traynor Guitar Mate Combo with Jensen P12N Speaker
Controls are in French. Dust and Cat Hair from many cats in open back. Sounds better for low volume bass guitar than guitar (unless you are going for that gauzy reverbed Slowdive sound on guitar)

Mesa Boogie F-30 Combo with Celestion Vintage 30 (Anybody wanna buy this?? PM Me..) It has never left my house. I like the clean channel dimed a lot. The "distortion" channel is worthless unless you are playing a seven string guitar in a band from Jacksonville, Fl with some tattooed retards.

Traynor T-25 Combo with Celestion Greenback Speaker. Great amp. Cheap. I'll never sell it.

amps I use for Bass:

Gallien Krueger 800RB Head with rack ears not in rack.

Traynor YBA-3 Custom Special (1973?)

1X15" Dietz Cab with EV-15ML 400 Watt Speaker
1X15" Mesa Diesel Cab with EV-15ML 400 Watt Speaker
