The Synth/Beatbox Love Thread
141Worth noting as well- beyond pure œtone points-You can easily patch so that you can add in a third oscillator- right from the synth itself. The Lfo can get up there in speed, and as you can easily connect the keyboard out to the sync of the lfo, lfo wave out into the mixer, and bam, you got a full multi wave 3rd oscillator (including sine, which is not one of the choices on the mains). Ok, sure, you lose the lfo functionality , and the noise (as your using its mixer channel), but it s also not a lesser oscillator, so you can easily get closer to mini style 3 osc sounds too. The spring verb is a real delight- I feared it being a gimmicky add on, but it s a very welcome addition (and yes, you can use it as a stand alone module as it has its own out). The granny has some nice utility too- a proper mult section, a very nice attenuverter (goes pos and neg) and a usable, if not full function high pass filter also... as an œeducation in synthesis, it s probably the best bet- clear, clean lines and it s multi-colored design isolating the œmodules , it represents the clearest flow to get a handle on understanding synth structure, and it doesn t become œmy first modular level if you do already know a thing or too... on the contrary. You realize you now have some luxury level utility that always is worth while. The seemingly simple, yet very effective sequencer is also great, while it allows you to save 3 sequences, they are not via buttons or menus, just saved in a three position switch format, that you can overwrite on the fly (allows you to edit in real time!). A nice feature, but maintains the what you see is what you get feel. Thankfully, you can alter some under the hood features (note priority, various eurorack voltage feeds that help play ball with other modules). The behringer neutron , is in my opinion, a killer deal as far as starting a modular set up. For $299 or whatever, you get 2 damn fine oscillators, plenty of decent utility, and a fair filter... I find it is gainstaged a bit too hot... as it s default, I think those oscillators hit the filter too aggressively. Great œcheap and dirty style sounds, but... you can dial it back if you are savy with patching... take the osc out> attenuator > filter in, and you then can dial it back to exploit what I feel are very worthy oscillators and get a much more controlled, warmer and rounder sound fed into that filter, which just opens it up to less aggressive tone.. It s a packed beast, but also, a behringer- so qc may be shoddy. Mine seems ok, some bleed, noise, but for the price, it s s real innovative bucket of synthesis. People want to compare it to the mother 32, but apart from its semi modular design, they are quite different. There s no sequencer on the neutron, and the mother 32 is based around it. One oscillator on the moog, vs dual on the behringer, full featured adsr s (2) on the neutron, vs the halfsie envelope in the mother.... but, but, the moog sounds like a moog (the ladder filter is gonna house that damn behringer any day), and again, the mother 32 ˜s true context is as a sequencer moog voice in modular format. It costs more, but you can tell why pretty quickly.
