Curiosity got the best of me with distortion pedals and prices are damn low, so I picked up a DS-1 and an EHX Rat clone for dirt cheap. I already have a Rat 2, but I find the form factor awful and my feet keep kicking the knobs and knocking the settings out of position.

How are you liking the DS-1? I have a lot of love for it : )

It should be arriving today or tomorrow. Looking forward to it because I love BOSS pedals. The only ones on my board right now are the Tremolo and the Tuner. (One day, I think I will get the BD-2, but I already have a blues driver).

I got it tonight. I liked the sound out of the box, but it has this issue where at max volume, it's a little lower than off. I don't really understand. It's the second pedal on my chain, after a TU-3. My ODs do not have this volume problem, there's plenty on tap.
It's strange. Is this normal or should I return it? (I bought it used)

That was normal with the old 80s/90s ones.
Is it an old one?
Might be. Should I be looking for a certain decade?

The old ones sound better, but have the volume drop even when dimed.
Apparently the Wazacraft modded ones - new - sound closest to the old ones while fixing the volume issue.
Old boss distortion pedals were all over the place be design. The hm2 could just about triple your volume.
You could always stick the ds1 in a loop with and EQ pedal with a small boost if you have one?
