I think it should be converted into the world's first libertarian reservation. The process would look like this:

Step 1: Provide funding to relocate anyone who doesn't want to live there to somewhere like Wisconsin since it'll be empty after the fact anyway.
Step 2: Provide funding and incentives to repatriate the anti-government types to Texas... which is why Wisconsin and Iowa and whatever will be empty.
Step 3: Remove or destroy all military infrastructure including nuclear weapons and destroy all existing military bases. They can build their own (good luck without scientists, a supply of fissile material, or access to state secrets).
Step 4: Remove all grid and gas and other utility connections to the outside world. They can bootstrap it internally, relying on the outside grid is evil commie socialism.
Step 5: Wall it off and step away

Terms for joining the reservation would include us revoking their US citizenship since they want to be sovereign citizens anyway. US citizens convicted of crimes like the January 6th thing will have their citizenship revoked and be deported to the libertarian reservation via air drop in lieu of taking up space in the prisons. Anyone caught sneaking into in the US without a passport or attempting to live in the US without a Visa would get the full-on dickhead treatment we give to Mexicans, not the kids gloves we give to Canadians and Europeans. Then they can have all the lawlessness and dictatorship that they want, and they get to prove to the world how good they are at bootstrapping their way around needing to have a food supply and basic infrastructure. And if they piss us off, we nuke them, but I guarantee that, after less than 50 years of a nightmarish collapsing society, there'd be a revolution and a socialized nation would spring up real quick, so nuking probably won't be necessary.
It's a novel idea, but I think it belongs with other theocratic dictatorships like Turkmenistan. There are no hurdles to controlling women's bodies and battering heathens with a King James in those motherfuckers.
We're headed for social anarchy when people start pissing on bookstores.

I don't see that as a problem. The people who would be going there want theocracy and conceal it under a thin veil of superficial "libertarianism" using narrow and specific definitions of "liberty" to advocate for removing protections to people's actual liberty. If that's what they want, they can have it in their own country instead of trying to force it on the rest of us. They just need to be careful what they wish for.

Right? Like this is the part of the upcoming apocalypse I enjoy?
I imagine that folks will start flocking back to the Great Lakes in the next couple of decades. We can afford to get a little warmer up here, and we have an abundance of fresh water.

And that was the day kid brother Milwaukee stood up to alpha sibling Chicago and became a great city (and the Twin Cities became overrun and unaffordable?). Fargo was the new Portland.
