my dad, writing on Wise and Newcastle wrote:It has been a quiet week in Lake Woebegon, my home town. Not so in some parts of the North of England, where the locals wear flat caps, walk whippets and, according to Kevin Keegan, never go to the theatre. Newcastle United have been luring the locals from the roar of the greasepaint by scoring no goals in three games. Actually Kevin is wrong. St James's Park has been the Theatre of the Absurd for years - if Ionesco's Rhinoceros charged across the pitch (this is not a reference to Mark Viduka) we wouldn't be terribly surprised.
Geordie emotional incontinence will infantilise us all. (Discuss). I wonder how many Novocastrians were chaining teddy bears to railings or whatever people did when the late Princess of Wales left us. If you are foolish enough to spend time, as I have recently, reading internet message boards, you will find a mélange of paranoia, pessimism and sentimentality. Mourinho, McClaren and Allardyce having passed up - or never been offered - the chance to seize the tiller of the Sinking Ship Minus Fifteen. Is the appointment of Gary McAllister wild optimism or a piece of fine judgement? The official announcement yesterday was delayed until 5.00pm so that the players were not confused by rumours. But weren't they staring at screens themselves, or were they actually kicking a ball around?
