I like my iPod. Not love. I don't really have Russ' problem because all my mp3s are on my computer and I just grab random stuff from that 100 GB dump and fill up the Pod and go nuts until I get bored and want something else.
I didn't really want an iPod, I figured I could get something comparable for cheaper because everyone's trying to put out iPod "killers" but everything I looked at in the store required Windows to run it, and I only have Mac gear. I guess they must figure Apple has that market sewn shut, which is a shame. I hate iTunes in general (spent a few days trying to get xmms to run on this thing, to no avail) so my opinion of the software is obviously really low. So, EA people, Xmas time is coming - if you can recommend something that'll work with no Windows software, can charge through my usb2 port and has a decent interface, plays mp3s and mp4s and even (!) oggs, I'd love to hear about it...
In the meantime, my Nano is pretty good.

Another iPod annoyance is how easily the unit scratches. There were a few lawsuits over this, because after a day of use some of these were so scratched up, it affected watching videos on the screen...

Knowing this, I bought a case that was rated very highly by iLounge. It completely encloses the iPod, with a silicon disk covering the click wheel, so it can be used within the case. Now the case is getting scratched up. In particular, the plastic that covers the screen has scratched significantly, just from normal use (putting it in a pocket without keys or change or putting it in a pocket in my laptop case).

I would have to give Apple a D grade for material science on this one. Every cell phone I have owned has been able to resist scratches after years of use. In fact, just about every portable device I have owned is not suseptible to scratches.

From what I understand, Apple coats the iPod with a resin. It is the resin that gets scratched up. Appearantly, in most cases, you can polish the scratches out. This has created a huge market for skins and polishing systems. Completely ridiculous!

This is typical Apple-retardation and group-think. It is obvious that their QA people are in love with Apple, and therefore cannot think critically about the product. If they were smart, they would hire QA people that hate Apple products, so at least they would be critical. Having known one QA guy from Apple, who is an Apple fanatic (no surprise) and having heard that Apple is full of group-thinkers, this is my best guess as to why this happens. Also why after 7 versions of iTunes, there are still some really obvious bugs in the software. Their QA staff are cheerleaders.

Anyway, it doesn't matter (for them). Their marketing has overcome any product flaws (there's a lot of them).

I'm glad to hear that WMA pro version 9 has lossless compression. I think there is plenty of room for competitors to make better portable media players (if you're not stuck on lossless compression, there are better products right now).

I'm having a major Itunes problem and was wondering if anyone could help.

Somehow all of my music was split up in two different folders. I decided to move it into one folder. Now the half I moved in (about 4,000 songs) have an exclamation point in front of them. When you click on the song, it says "unable to find original song file. Would you like to locate the song file?" You click yes and you have to go through the directory and click on the actual song. Only then will it play.

That's a bit of a long process to do 4,000 times. My question is, does anyone know how I can link an entire album instead of going song to song? That may be bearable.

You could just "delete" every track out of iTunes (choosing "no" when it asks if you also want to delete the files) and then just drag your entire music folder back in.

It'll probably take a few minutes for iTunes to import them. But any songs that were already on the iPod probably won't need to be recopied.

I had this same problem but not nearly as many albums. When I started using Emusic it began throwing files into My Documents rather than my external hard drive. After realizing this, I consolidated all the files to the external drive and had the exclamation points on the ten some albums that were downloaded from Emusic. I deleted them from my Itunes program [not from the Itunes folder!]. It asks "are you sure"? I said yes. It did not ask to "keep or remove files" because those files cannot be located. I created a new folder for all the Emusic files, and then clicked File/Add folder to Library/Emusic files. It took only a few minutes.

I had to do the same when I moved my music off the 6GB hard drive o the 120GB drive I had just purchased.

you may lose your playlists, but all the music should transfer just fine.

yeah. Mine died just within warranty. got another one- died within a year, came back to life and died again. All it ever did was sit in my pocket. If you get that unhappy iPod symbol, just open it up and stick a folded business card between the casing and the hard-drive. Seriously, this works almost every time. More details here.

Right now I have an 80gb Video iPod and it's fucking fantastic. If it dies tomorrow I'll be pissed off but right now it's my favourite toy. Excellent sound quality, looks great, the film and movie playback is flawless, stores my pictures too. Love it, scarcely ever turn the bloody thing off anymore. I know it's a flawed product but I love it so much, I can't vote CRAP.
