Garage days is not getting the respect it deserves here
Garage days is a supreme record, the killing joke cover alone is something I can't imagine someone ever having a problem with, it's really great

Excellent point. Can't believe I did not mention it in my post above. Whenever I listen to Metallica now, this is where I start. Tight, short, fun. Good stuff.
Band: Metallica
153CRAP.
Waffles for Cliff Burton's chops, their obvious influence, and because I can understand how they would have been a damn good live act in the early days...
...but seriously, crap. Crappy songwriting, consistently embarrassing lyrics, boring guitar solos, lousy drumming, singing that gets downright cringeworthy, melody pretty much absent.
I guess I agree with miseryandthesun, is what it is.

I can confirm that Metallica's version of The wait is indeed horrible. Contary to public belief they were not big fans of the band - it was suggested to them to cover for hipness sakes. Master of puppets is possibly the best metal album ever. Still crap though from the black album onwards.

that whiskey in a jar cover was cool, but not as cool as the jerry garcia version. the discharge cover is not bad.
any word as to how metallica gets mostly crap votes, megadeth mostly not crap votes, and yet metallica did better than megadeth in their thunderdome?

Their version of the wait is a real good thrash track, one of the best there is.
Hipness sakes? How hip was Killing Joke at the time?
NOT AT ALL, dude. The opposite of hip, they were doing foofy goth disco at the time.
I read the story, everything on garage days was off the only mix tape (that Kirk made) they had to listen to on an entire European tour. They knew the songs inside and out by the end of the tour and just went in and did them with Jason to get him used to recording with the band.

I wonder if this is true. I mean, James Hatfield is not able to get the fucking Smells Like Teen Spirit riff right, while Lars fucks the bit of drumming at the beginning.

I stand corrected. Their cover of this song was not pre-ordained to gain respect among the indie community, however, I still think the song loses all its intensity with that version. The groove is lost and the vocals sound like they're sung under water. Then of course there's the obligatory solo. KJ don't have a single solo on any of their songs - Metallica obviously felt that the song needed something snappy in the middle...
