I have been hearing about the PlayStation 5 specs. What was interesting is that they were discussing that audio will be processed using the GPU using ray tracing algorithms for more 3d sound. As I understand it the Ray Tracing algorithms are used for light and color reflection using sound with that type of processing would allow for directional sound reflected against environmental elements of different reflectivity, creating a environmental reverb and the ability to 360 place sounds in the environment.Cool cool stuff.

I had to implement it in a simulator I worked on and I'm a moron. but that's just badass to use it for sound and crunch on the gpu

Ray Tracing seems to be the standard in animation but processers have just got to the point where they can render it in real time. A lot of people think that the ray tracing audio would require a surround sound system. But I think it could also be used for VR headphones that would be able to render your audio position and reflections based on the positions of your virtual ears which would be a very cool thing.
