Question for Usaians here. Are the loony fringe MAGA weirdos a genuinely large voting block, by that I mean 30-40% of people that vote or is it a very loud minority plus the usual Republicans because I Vote Republican group of Conservatives you get in any society that will happily chuck anyone under the bus for a tax cut?

I have to be honest, the US is increasingly looking like an experimental open air insane asylum.

From my perspective, living in a very purple exurb of Chicago, and with an extended family that is fairly moderate but generally split in half politically, I do see it as the latter. No one in my extended family, and only one or two folks in my neighborhood of several thousand are "Fuck Your Feelings" flag wavers.

That being said, you hit the nail on the head with how you described it. Republicans - even the ones in my extended family - are a bunch of selfish fucks who vote that way because they perceive they will personally benefit more by doing so.

You are absolutely correct.

I'm pretty sure my middle-class family pays a higher percentage in taxes than we did before the republicans "fixed" the tax code seven or so years ago.

I’ve said it a few times here, but until the Dems are willing to reduce precariousness and increase workers’ rights, minimum wage etc y’all are fucked. The current DNC would rather throw America into the sun than commit to public healthcare.

Remember folks the US healthcare system exists to discipline workers by tying access to your employer. It’s not there to actually provide healthcare.

PS not just a foreigner pontificating on US politics. I studied comparative healthcare systems at university in my first political science degree and wrote papers on the differences between the New Zealand public and US private insurance systems.

The people who do not want government run healthcare say the reason is they don't want the government deciding on what treatments they are allowed to get, the extreme end of which was "DEATH PANELS!!!"

These people are absolutely OK with a private, for profit insurance company making those decisions, though.

Yeah, I thought it was obvious that I was being facetious when I made the jab about being from New Zealand. Most people I know consider that place to be paradise, so I didn’t think anyone would take me seriously. I’m sorry if feelings got hurt, but I have absolutely no prejudice against anyone from NZ. It seems like a great place except for the fact that it’s illegal to be autistic there, and it was also illegal to have AIDS until 2021. Otherwise it seems like a fine country and nobody should feel defensive about being a Kiwi.
