If you haven't been, you're not allowed to drink outside of the tents. I went once during the week (Wednesday?) in the early afternoon with two coworkers from Bavaria, one had a relative working in one of the tents.
So I wasn't expecting to get into a tent, but do they seriously not have or not allow any drinking outside of the tents?? Considering we're talking about a country where public drinking is allowed, and one where I walked around with and was sold a gluhwein on a public sidewalk, this doesn't seem right.
Bitte

I would think with that many inebriated people, it is easier to control from a security perspective to have the drinking confined to the indoor spaces. There is a caveat:
Can you drink beer outside the tents?
Yes – in the many attractive small and large beer gardens by the tents and permanently-stationed drink-sellers. Unlike a normal beer garden under the chestnut trees you can be served at your table!

Fair enough and understood. I've seen videos and wow I can understand why they want to contain the drinking to certain spaces. They be of the drunk.

I'm still not sure if I'm going to go. Hanging out in a quiet(er) Black Forest village sounds very appealing to me.

So, I will be passing through London, but next week… about a month earlier than you.
Yeah thank you but change of plans. Puerto Rico. Never been. Not traveling, gonna do nothing for 10 days in January. I've never gone on holiday and done nothing and it sounds marvelous. Maybe surf a bit.

Travel well both of you!

Anybody have any Sacramento recommendations? Bars, restaurants, outdoors stuff, bookstores, record stores... yadda yadda yadda. Much obliged.

Anyone have Boston recos? I’ve never been and we’ll be doing 3 days there in a few weeks.

I don't really but it is better now than 10 years ago. I recall one cool bar that also was a video arcade, though. Good cocktails and lots of great vintage games. IIRC some good bar food. Easily found on Google I'm sure.

I’m done w/ work in Stuttgart and have a free day tomorrow before I travel to Warsaw next week for more work.

I have not decided what to do yet tomorrow but have narrowed it down to the following. All are about two hours away by train:

a) Hang out in one of the towns on Lake Constance
b) Go to Nürnberg Altstadtfest
c) Go to München Oktoberfest

As discussed previously, I have no tent reservation for option c).

Leaning heavily towards option a) right now.

Do Option A! I was actually going to suggest that trip when you first posted.

I ended up at Oktoberfest by accident like over 20 years ago, just hiking around Munich and sleeping in our van in the city for a night with my hiking buddy and we smelled roasted almonds after finding a parking spot for the night and followed the scent, only to discover the festival grounds and be like "oh yeah, it's late September". We got wasted and snuck into tents the whole time for a couple nights, it was a mess. This is the only way to do it, in your early 20s, barnstorming, otherwise it's probably pretty gross. I don't think you are missing anything at all, especially alone! Go have a nice day at the lake, take a ferry, go to the fortress etc.

Yep, I just made a final decision after seeing your post and also that Friedrichshafen has a zeppelin museum. The airship, not the band. :-)
