When I was deep into researching cases for my Bean bass my suggested ads all became gun & rifle related shit for months.

I kept saying I was staying out of synths. I have enough gear rabbit holes as it is and I've seen the scary Eurorack creations people get lost in.

Then I traded work for a little monophonic deal that's fun to play with and overdub with. Now I find myself staring at polyphonic stuff. I want something analog, versatile, good tone, but no hyper expensive, vintage whatever. I've been looking at these:

44 keys? That's fine for a mono but a poly? Plus, only 5 voice polyphony. If you already had a poly or two then sure, add this as an extra but for your only poly - NOPE.

IMO a polyphonic synth needs 61 keys and 8 voices minimum.

I think you should be looking more at this:

Yeah that one is better. And it costs more. I'm probably only ever going to buy one synth (I have a Hammond, a Rhodes, a piano and some kind of obsession) so I might have to get the right thing and be done.

Yes, especially if it's going to be your only synth, you need to get it right. Listen to some demos and if possible try it out in person - the REV2 is very capable with lots of modulation possibilities but if you don't click with the sound you could end up disappointed.

Another option could be the Korg Prologue. There's a 4 octave 8 voice and a 5 octave 16 voice. Less modulation but a good sound. Alternatively you could wait for one of the proposed behringer polysynths, but these have been coming down the pike for so long it's starting to look like they might never show.

Yeah, some of the chatter I've seen on forums has people preferring the sounds on the Take Five over the Rev2 even though it's way more limited. I think Guitar Center carries Sequential. I might have to brave the mild anxiety and subtle depression that store full of things I like inexplicably produces and try them out.

I'll look up that Korg too. I pretty much want a classic Prophet 5 sound in a new synth.

Edit: Dang, after poking around and looking at the Korg stuff. You can get so much, so cheap with a Korg Minilogue. There are some pretty convincing demos where people are just doing the Blade Runner soundtrack on that little guy which sells for under $400 used. I'm sure it doesn't quite have that old Prophet richness (and obviously limited octaves), but amazingly versatile. I might have to talk myself out of spending the big bucks.

Yeah if you can live with the limited polyphony it's a fairly capable synth. You might want to check out the Behringer Deepmind too.

If you’re not using it with a band, there’s no reason not to just go with software.
