I hadn't heard of these things, but he recommended the brands:

Glyph
Lacie
Rockstor

Can any of you experienced folks recommend one of these models for me? I'm recording 9 songs.
Glyph has been my go to for decades but I"m sure any hard drive would do. Just clone it to another hard drive for back up.

Thanks. Is 1 terabyte enough space for 9 songs?

(Thanks to DaveA as well.)

1TB will hold 100 hours of 8-track audio at 24-bit/96kHz.
Calculator here.

I’ve tried to reply to this about a hundred times and must have gotten pulled away before I ever clicked send.

As for plugins, I just prefer to do as much as I can with as little screen time as possible. I do some very light comping here and there, but I prefer to use the computer basically to play and record. I just patch everything through a big live sound board and have had a great time so far. It’s more expensive than a $50 plugin but I can always sell physical gear unless something completely shits the bed.

Their M2000 multi effects unit has some great reverbs; plate and room emulations. The less ubiquitous Reverb 4000 is even a notch better, some have called it a poor man's Bricasti. The 2000 can be snagged for $300-400 on a good day. The 4000 takes patience to find for under $1k but they're both a fraction of what they fetched new when they were being manufactured.
Thanks as always - those are both a little out of my budget right now, but I’ve added them to my saved searches. There was a 4000 available for $1k right after you posted this, but couldn’t move on it yet.

I got a $150 Sony DPS-R7 to hold me over for a while and it’s ok. The long tailed reverbs either kind of work or don’t, but I only just found a tighter room sound patch to give a little ambience to a vocal. I can’t see myself adding gobs of this stuff anywhere.

The reverb helps, but I noticed the biggest improvement to adding space and depth was muting nonessential elements in the rough mix. Still looking forward to trying a TC Electronics thingy.

I’ve owned a Lexicon PCM 60 for years. Payed 350$ for it. Great sounding reverb!

An inexpensive Direct Box that doesn’t suck

My primary use will be plugging in a keyboard/guitar/bass through a pedal board and into a Hi-Z input of my preamps and/or the Hi-Z input of the interface. Right now plugging a bass or keyboard direct is fine. But if I use a pedalboard I get massive buzz, which I’m guessing is a ground loop. I also plan on using it to get both DI and miked bass signals simultaneously. I will also reamp occasionally.

So I definitely need a ground lift with a Hi-Z input and I’m guessing Hi-Z output (most only have XLR out). Does the ground get lifted on the parallel out if I just use that instead of the XLR out?

I’m open to spending a little more if there’s something more versatile that I’ll actually use for other things. The EA one looks great, but I don’t think I need $225 worth of direct box for the amount I’m going to actually be using it.

No, the loop out is not ground liftable., Just disconnects the ground from the input jack to the XLR. The in and thru always are connected.

I have feelings about direct boxes. I think people think too much about them. I prefer passive to active 90% of the time. The Radial Pro Di is about a hundo and is bullet proof, and works great. I also have about 6 Whirlwind IMP boxes that are about half as much and also work great, but do not have a input pad. I also have a bunch of cheapo monoprice, and other off brand di's that work and seem to work fine. I've noticed very little quality difference in sound between any of these passive DI boxes.
My Countryman Active DI seems to keep a tiny bit more of the high end intact, but I NEVER grab it because i've had to repair it about 4-5 times over the years. I've don't remember ever having to repair a passive DI. I have 1 IMP that doesnt even have paint anymore because it has been banged around for 20 years or so. Works fine.

I’m probably overthinking this

What would you get if you you wanted to plug a bass into a pedal board and then 1/4” into a high impedance input on the front of a mic preamp? I think the key here is the impedance with a ground lift.

I’d like the device to also be useful for impedance conversion and normal reamping as well.

I might be misunderstanding what you're asking for, but basically any DI box? You could also just plug right in from the output of your pedalboard and see what happens - worst case you'd just need some kind of pad or a pedal with the volume turned down if it's blowing up the input.

There are some bass preamp/drive pedals (sansamp etc) that have DI/line level output built in, so that could be a good $$$ option too if you're in the market for some pedals anyway.

I'm not sure if a DI+reamp in one exists, but if it does I imagine Radial makes it.
