It would be cool if Werner Herzog died right after that post.

I never liked his vocals much, but he was definitely a legend. Sad to see him gone at 52.
Well, already with Grotesque in the late 80s, he was going for a more high pitched Mille Petrozza (Kreator) meets Quorthon (Bathory) sound which was at odds with the Chuck Schuldinger (Death) ideal of the times and which gave the vocals an in retrospect more "Black metal" feel. Of course, every other "gothenburg" band would adopt that vibe later which took some edge out of it (see also:Page Hamilton vs. Nu metal) but at the time, it was fresh and made him stand out. For the record, the very first At the Gated demo (later EP) Gardens of grief had him temporarily trying a more low-pitch/"typical" growl; you might prefer that style and it's a great little record.

Btw, At the Gates-Not Dissection, Dark Tranquility or-lulz!-In Flames-*single-handedly* invented the melodeath style as well as a lot of the "scandinavian" melancholy tremolo riffing styles norwegians like Burzum and Emperor would use; people who claim otherwise were not there at the time. Well, I was and can verify that for better or worse, At the Gates were behind all that stuff; even before they had record out, local bands who previously wanted to sound like Dismember or Kreator changed their sound overnight, the MANY live shows here in gothenburg as opening act for bigger international bands were key; it was impossible to be a death metal fan in gothenburg in 91/92 and not notice their influence both musically and vocally...

A little shocked and only finding out about this now, but... Christine Hahn, drummer for Glenn Branca's second recorded band, the Static, and for Malaria!, the early-'80s Berlin postpunk group. Also had a one-shot project w/a pre-Sonic Youth Kim Gordon, called Introjection (aka CKM). And played in the no wave/no wave-adjacent groups Luxus and Daily Life.

She was a visual artist of some renown, as well.

Back at the end of May. Had no idea b/c I was away in Japan at the time. Bummed.

Danny Thompson’s discography is bananas. On his Wikipedia page there’s this confusing pairing:

Talk Talk: The Colour of Spring (1986); Spirit of Eden (1988)
Thunderbirds (TV series): (theme tune) (1964)

That’s some range!
