Fuck cancer.
Many decades ago, I went to a terrible party promoting a stupid website. There was an open bar, which was appealing at 23, but the party was so incredbily stupid that I was going to slit my wrist in the bathroom if I stayed another minute.

There was a stage with a single chair set up. I asked who was playing and the response was "some R&B guy." The idea of sticking around to watch a rando from Bel Biv DeVoe play an acoustic set was completely repulsive.

It was D'Angelo. I did a complete 180 about 30 seconds into his set.

Never in my life have I been so unreceptive so someone's music. Dude forced me to stick around and learn something.

Oustanding musician. RIP.

A wonderful and magnificent artist. I can only imagine the empyrean soul music made by D'Angelo and Angie Stone beyond the grave. Requiescat.

I like those albums.
They didn't hit me as hard as they did some people, but his talent was super obvious.
And being more groove oriented than song oriented, they may well hit me harder now than they did when I first got them.
I admired how he didn't make a big deal out of how technically great he was--way more like Sly than Prince on that front.

There's a clip of him singing a Curtis Mayfield song with Eric Clapton on some awards show.
It's actually good.
And it's funny b/c you can visibly tell Clapton is going "fuck, why do I have a mic. I have to bring it 150% to get anywhere near this guy's general universe of singing."
He ends up not embarrassing himself and looks relieved at the end of it.

I hadn't listened to Voodoo in years (kinda burned out on it in college) but listened to the first few songs in the car yesterday and I'd totally forgotten how much weird production stuff is going on, random studio banter left in, and like you said way more groove based than the other neo-soul stuff from that time. Really need to sit back down a few times with that record again.

One of the things I love about this weird corner of the internet is I can suddenly discover stuff I’ve never paid attention to because I respect people’s opinions on music here.

I’ve never listened to D'Angelo and now listening to Voodoo. Fantastic headphone music.

Shame it took his passing.
