My uncle, who I was extremely close to, died over the summer. Yesterday, one of my cousins hosted Thanksgiving—the first without my uncle. It was lovely and nice.
My cousin had all of my uncle’s old records and 78s and said we should take anything that interested us. We didn’t want to be greedy, as he and a few of my nieces grew up listening to my uncle’s musical theater records. (Think Rogers and Hammerstein, not Andrew Lloyd Webber.) So we only took five or six LPs plus maybe 15 78s. All of the 78s need a thorough cleaning, and none of them are collectible, but we did get some by Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, and Frank Sinatra, plus Judy Garland singing “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”
At some point, we’ll need to buy something to play them on. The challenge will be finding room for an old phonograph.

We drove from LA back to Northern California on Thanksgiving Day returning home after visiting family. Took the notoriously horrible Interstate 5 and it was gloriously empty. Made record time, and I didn't get riled up at fellow drivers once.
While in LA we took the kids to the Museum of Tolerance. Security inspected our vehicle for bombs before we could enter the parking garage.

I am so sorry about your uncle. He sounds like a solid guy.
For the 78s, plenty of dj decks (vestal etc.) have a 78 function. Smaller than a phonograph.

I concur with Seby about turntables that support 78 RPM play. My Audio Technica AT-LP-120 supports it, though you should get a dedicated 78 RPM mono cartridge for playback. A separate headshell would also be useful if you want to be able to quickly swap between normal vs. 78 RPM play. A good budget option (Audio Technica AT-VM95SP/H):

Thanks, both of you. He really was a great guy, a bonus grandad for our kids.
I’ll probably just hold off on a player for the 78s, until I have space for the thing I really want—an antique phonograph with a horn.

don't use an antique victrola - it will destroy what is left of the music in the 78 groove. Buy an actual turntable that uses an electronic cartridge rather than a sewing needle.

After losing our dog Zelda at the end of the Summer, I was rocked and didn't think I would even think about getting another pet for awhile. Our friends work with a wonderful rescue in Chicago and introduced me to this lil sweetheart, and now I am going to adopt her tomorrow. She goes by Delta (for now), and is a 2.5 year old Cane Corso mix, just a 75 lbs sack of sugar.

No amount of 'covering up the flavor' (mayo, dijon, diced butter pickle, half teaspoon of sauce that routinely makes celebrities cry, served on hot sourdough toast) will make me enjoy canned sardines. Awful.
