There is absolutely nothing good about "Guns 'n Roses".
Fuck those clowns.

I quoted Westerberg not for any 'killer' playing but his unique approach to the guitar. Something like "Answering Machine"...which is in open A, but there's nothing about to suggest it's in open A. He makes it all sound elastic, it's very new wave-y with original approaches to chord shapes and riffs (I'm thinking specifically of the swirly parts in the chorus) So, you're wrong.

173No, you're wrong. I've seen him play enough times.
Go ahead and dissect the chord structures, it still comes out boring.

Guns+Roses needs a few bullets put in the heads of fans and band members alike..

It's too bad you're being pedantic about this.
"Swirly" - right when he plays on the G and B strings, like 7th fret G and 8th fret B, plays the rest of the strings open, and pulls it up and down the neck on the offbeat - during the "How do you say goodnight" SWIRL-SWIRL-SWIRL "To an answering machine"
Elastic - second part of the vocal line in the chorus - over "answering ma-chine" - he's playing a Bsus2 to Esus2 to E. But the chords don't seem to be 'played' so much as 'evolved' - unless you know exactly what he's doing it sounds very weird - the chords have many notes in common and the transition (though it's 9 frets up on the neck!) is very subtle.
Subtle is the word here. You are wrong. Subtly.

177You take all the rock out of the rock.
"Swirl" and "Elastic" have no place in rock music. I'll bet you're a real hoot to see bands with. Do you bring a calculator?

dylan carson is my other tip, hex is some of the most incredible guitar playing i have heard in ages.
Agreed to both.
I love Earth and Dylan Carlson. I'm a huge fan and just saw them play again a couple of weeks ago and loved it, but is he really an amazing guitar player in any sort of technical sense? I like his music a lot but at the same time it's soo simple and repetitive that I just can't call him a guitar genius. I listen to a lot more Earth than Led Zeppelin but to say that Jimmy Page sucks as a guitar player (based on a comment from a different post...) and Dylan Carlson is underrated just doesn't make sense. I'm just strictly speaking from "guitar playing ability" and not what someone prefers in terms of the music they like.

Another great swirl example I can think of right now is Hendrix's intro to "Castles Made Of Sand". More elastic stuff would be some of David Byrne's playing. Leary from the Butthole Surfers brings ample doses of both to the table. Those off-the-cuff concepts are all over rock. Sorry. S. Youth?
My original point wasn't that Westerberg used those - everyone does - it's that he wrenched it in a very un-standard way from a very standard tuning.
