Watched The Electrical Life of Louis Wain last night and quite enjoyed its unexpected weirdness...Will Sharpe (from Landscapers) directed the heck out of it. Definitely for cat lovers of all kinds.

172YELLOWJACKETS, only 4 episodes in, but damn really great. Melanie Lynskey is amazing, glad to see her get a real starring role in a series after playing the dowdy midwestern wife to so many Hollywood dudes in films for the last decade+.

173The Alpinist is fantastic and making me feel like I'm really fucking up in life.
Like Mean Girls, but they eat each other.tallchris wrote: Sun Jan 02, 2022 2:44 pm YELLOWJACKETS, only 4 episodes in, but damn really great. 175You loved 2020's The Platform on Netflix, directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia, about a vertical prison system where inmates are assigned to a level and forced to ration food from a platform that moves between the floors. It's a movie that Barry Hertz of The Globe and Mail deemed "extraordinarily gross, metaphorically blunt, but also perversely and wildly entertaining".
Well, not to be outdone, Hulu brings you and Gordon Ramsey presents Next Level Chef, a competition cooking show where contestants have to prepare meals in one of three kitchens, using ingredients from a platform that descends from the "glistening top floor" to the "challenging bottom of the basement".
I made it about eight minutes into the show before giving up.

176I liked Platform a lot. The ending left me a little cold, but overall very not crap. It had to be tough to end a story like that.

177I just did a full update of https://anomalouscinema.com/ - everything on the site should be available on it's respective streaming service.
A LOT of stuff is now expired, but here's a list of good movies that are available again for the first time in a while:
The Hospital - Amazon Prime
Jacob's Ladder - Hulu
The Killing (Kubrick) - Amazon Prime
Night of the Hunter - Amazon Prime
The Stranger - Amazon Prime
The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3 (2009) The original is better, but this version is surprisingly good too. - Amazon Prime
In other news, I was pleasantly surprised by "Only Murders in the Building" on Hulu. I really thought I'd hate it, and ended up laughing out loud several times.

178Netflix
Till Death, 2021
Let's face it, you're not Verge of Light; you don't have highbrow tastes in cinema. So come on down in the gutter with me and check out this Megan Fox vehicle. And you can rationalize it by telling yourself, "Okay, I lost about 10 points of IQ watching that, but the cinematography was actually pretty good." I mean, that's what I did.

179It's OK. Started out strong but kinda boring me now by episode nine. I'll keep going.kmc wrote: Sun Dec 19, 2021 9:22 amI haven't read the book but I have heard that the series strays quite a bit from the book.A_Man_Who_Tries wrote: Sat Dec 18, 2021 10:38 amThat's interesting. The book was terrible (if well-received). Curious to know how much surgery they might have done to pull a decent show from it.kmc wrote: Sat Dec 18, 2021 10:08 am Who else is on the Station Eleven train? Not typically into hyper realistic dystopian plot lines, especially nowadays, but the first three episodes are some of the most striking and efficient world-building in recent memory.

(I did kinda enjoy Fried Barry with the whole Joe Bob presentation - watch at your own risk. It's on AMC+ / Shudder.)
