Cleaned under the bathtub for the first time in years. Very satisfying and not at all as daunting as it seemed.

My 50th birthday is coming up in a couple months, and we’re going to have get-together themed around the mid-century. I’ve been coming up with a period-appropriate playlist, with schmaltz and kitsch from the 50s and 60s.
Or that’s how it started, at least. Some of the schmaltz is amusing (Oscar Peterson/Nelson Riddle, Lawrence Welk), as is some of the kitsch (Martin Denny). But a lot of that orchestral pop, I love sincerely, even with the goopy strings and backup vocals.
And some of it, I love *beyond* sincerely. While I went down the rabbit hole, I hit several Nat King Cole songs that just kill me with their beauty—“Nature Boy,” “Pretend,” “Lush Life,” and, yes, “Unforgettable.”
Then I came across a record of Sarah Vaughan singing Broadway songs over strings. One of my now-deceased uncle’s favorite songs was “Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered” from the show Pal Joey. Vaughan’s slow, tender version of it . . . I could barely get through it. My eyes immediately watered up. So beautiful.

Happy almost-birthday! Love Nat King Cole. "If You Said No" is one of the most gorgeous songs I've ever heard from the lyrics to the stunning string arrangement. I don't know if the option exists for you, but I will routinely go to the butcher's shop and ask for a hambone. They'll charge me some nominal fee for it, like $5.
Soak your dry beans of choice (I suspect cannellini beans might be the easiest for you to get over there) in cold water for six to eight hours. Rinse extravagantly to wash away that extra layer of starch. Cover with water in an oversized pot. Add garlic, salt, pepper, and your hambone. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer until the beans are tender. Should be an hour or two on the stovetop, overnight in a slow cooker.
Estimated cost, assuming they don't just throw a hambone at you to get you to leave the meat shop, should be around $9 for five or so meals. Add rice, now it's twelve to fifteen meals. This has kept me alive for more years than I care to think about. Beans freeze well, too, so you can protect your future self from hunger.
Also, making your own bread is cheaper than buying bread by a long sight. You will need bread flour, yeast, salt, oil, eggs, and honey, but for $10-15 you can make six loaves of bread. Freeze any you won't use immediately.

For real?
