Right and yes, anecdotally I'm pretty sure that the instruments I have associated w/ that sound were single-coils (if/when I was paying attention).

Also that series of videos about "where does an amp/speaker cabinet/guitar's sound/tone come from" mentioned in the bolt-on thread that feature the dude in the potentially sus 45 hat has me inclined to believe that the neck/fretboard material has almost nothing to do with what we hear out of the speakers.

In answer to the question: I would like to try building an aluminum fretboard, but to do so, probably need some serious equipment. Might be a while.

I have doubts about the effect on tone. when I tap the fretboard on this, it rings and sounds like a solid tuning fork.

weekly update: Nearing completion- neck has been sanded and polished, basic fretwork done. This is wider, with a shallower profile, very much like my favorite 70's SG. Body has 10 or so thin coats of Tru-oil.

I have a few tweaks to make, but hopefully can start final assembly before practice tomorrow.
