I always just assumed from interviews at the time that they had the songs for Down and Shot at the same time and opted to save the more 'up' ones for the album they made for a major. I remember reading an interview with Duane where he said words to the effect that they were making an album for T&G but it would be their last before moving to a major.
I think if they hadn't gone to the major they probably wouldn't have made anymore records after Mac quit. I always assumed they made the last stuff because they still owed it to the label. Not that it's even bad or anything but I know even when they split they still owed cash to the label.
What I'm saying is, there probably wouldn't have been anymore albums after Down (which may itself have been different) if they hadn't have left T&G.
That's just my angle on it. Where's DL Yow on the board when you need him?
