Given how controversial and inescapable she was in the 80s and 90s, it’s rather shocking to see how little purchase she has with younger generations. Fleetwood Mac, Kate Bush, and Metallica seem to have kept resonating or to be continually rediscovered. But Madonna? Does anyone under the age of thirty give a shit about “Like a Virgin”?
The other bands you've mentioned have more currency with the Tik Tok crowd, or, relevancy adjacent to other people culture trends. I'd argue that your average young person isn't finding out about the Mac by record digging but by scrolling. Madonna's music isn't on movies or hit tv shows. It's not ephemeral in that way. And, strictly speaking, musically her music is more sonically varied than the hitmakers of today.

Gen X gays are still all about it bout it tho even at their most critical.

It makes me wonder whether it’s expensive to license Madonna songs. I remember once reading a movie director describing the insane prices Van Halen wanted to use their songs in movies—not just more than Zep, but a *lot* more.

So maybe Madonna isn’t catching on with the youngsters because “Open Your Heart” is too expensive for a Netflix budget?

I wouldn't go that far but for some reason she's just not culturally relevant with the Tik Tok crowd. I don't Tik Tok so I can't say for sure, but every reel I've run across on IG seem strictly suited for first wave fans. Personally speaking I believe her classic songs are just too musical for what kids are listening to today.

Can they get around that by having Chickenfoot re-record the VH songs?

I have zero idea if this is true, but wasn't there a publishing hubbub with TikTok and some giant pub company in the last year? Wonder if that's why.

If so it speaks to how the younger generation now consumes most music. It's all about streaming platforms and online trends instead of organic outreach.

We're walking the dog this morning. Perfect autumn late morning - sunny, crisp, dry.
As we approach an intersection, this guy who was at most 25* pulls up to the stop sign with all the windows down, absolutely blasting "Like a Prayer".

* - because I can actually remember the album release press cycle for "Like a Prayer", it's quite likely that I am grossly overestimating this person's age.

The worst for this was Lou Reed. Richard Jobson has a wonderful story about how he outfoxed him on this score.

I don't understand the appeal of Meinl cymbals. Every one I've tried sounds like hitting a trash can.

it's hard to sit around and bs about music gear and nonsense with the potential end of democracy in the US a few days away.
