Started watching Berlin Alexanderplatz again the other night, on the Criterion Channel. Likely thee greatest serial audio-visual experience I've seen. Totally evokes the Weimar era. Sometimes I need to recalibrate and get a heavy dose of the real stuff just to remember why I bother looking at screens in the first place. There's so much life in it. A truly novelistic film experience. Way ahead of its time. Troubling, of course, but never uninteresting.It's very disappointing, however, to visit movie review sites and read what some hack "politically oriented" young reviewers have to say about it. Talk about missing the point, like...completely. It makes me feel hella glad I'm not in academia right now teaching these people.

coming back from living in Colombia for 2 years, I can strongly recommend 2 Colombian films by the same filmmakers:Embrace of the Serpent (El Abrazo de la Serpiente)-- it's about ayahuasca, coca, rubber, colonialism and christianity, the jungle, spiritual adventure, and tripping balls. this film's plot has one of the most fascinating nonlinear structures I have ever seen.Birds of Passage (Pajaros del Verano)-- this presents the "origin story" of the modern Colombian drug trade, specifically the trade in marijuana in the areas of Santa Marta and La Guajira. the cinematography and shots in La Guajira, a desert peninsula populated by the indigenous Wayyu, are absolutely incredible. I've been there and met the Wayyu, and was encouraged to learn that this film was made with their close collaboration, not just with them as the subjects. the film has interesting symbolism throughout, though I'm still trying to decipher the exact significance of that symbolism.

Got stoned and watched UNDER THE SILVER LAKE last night and it totally blew me away. I can see how a lot of people hate it, but I was onboard from the first shot.
