i've only really listened to aja, and only because in the last 10 years no matter who i live with there's always like 5 copies of it floating around. maybe because, along with herb alpert and his tijuana brass band, there are several vinyl copies of aja in every budget bin in every used record and thrift store across the nation.
it's fun as background music i guess, but personally i've heard black cow like 100x too many and have never intentionally listened to steely dan unless at a friend's request. the whole dan vibe reminds me of listening to crappy radio in my dad's conversion van, car sick, while traveling across country to yellowstone and hitting up every historical marker possible.

Found this on the wiki entry for "Hipsters" a while back. It has since been removed.
Similar to other social groups, hipsters have been accused of exercising peer pressure to persuade other members of the group to adopt certain attitudes and ideas (e.g., that the music of Steely Dan lacks soul).

you may never like the dan, but if there's an album to start with, it's not aja.
the royal scam is the best one.
alternately, you could get an early one like "can't buy a thrill" or "countdown to ecstacy". you may prefer the early stuff if you want something less slick.

This reminded me to listen to the Live Steely Dan stuff from The Record Plant. So great is the Steely Dan.
I almost feel bad for the unwashed masses who do not understand just how excellent Steely Dan is. Almost. Mostly I just laugh.
