Sleep is their own category of awesome. Same with Neurosis.

But yeah most of the sludge bands often associated are better.

I like many of the bands that influenced Melvins (Sabbath, Stooges, Flipper, Alice Cooper) and that they influenced (Sleep, Nirvana, Neurosis, Earth) way more than I like Melvins. I feel the same way about the Birthday Party

Harvey Milk are what the Melvins aspired to be.
