Time for Americans to explain something.

Tim Miller, Never-Trump Republican pundit… Young-ish, gay, seemingly very socially liberal… I can’t find anything about his actual political views other than “I’m a Republican that hates Trump”… is that a thing, or is he just another liberal that hates paying taxes?

I had to look him up. I actually saw an interview with him a few weeks ago. I forgot where I came across it, but essentially in the interview he explained all of this. He was working on the Trump campaign, it was pretty much a job. He got wrapped up in the sport of campaigning and didn't really believe Trump meant everything he said. When Trump became president, most people that supported him assumed the office of the President would reel him in and make him presidential. What fools they were, to believe that. Looking at some of his supporters, the normal people who were truly hurt by neoliberal policies and couldn't stand voting for Hillary thought the same thing (Go watch the town hall that Sanders did after the election for proof of that). The reality is that Trump meant everything he said, flipped the script on all the norms found in politics and here we are, with people like Tim Miller regretting everything he did to get Trump elected.

So, to answer your question: to people like Tim Miller, politics is just a sport. The players don't matter much, because winning is the only goal.

This has already happened.

Libertarians already tried to be a centrist party with Gary Johnson/Bill Weld but it didn't take long for people to realize that they are cuckoo.

I think everyone's pretty much forgotten that the parties are private entities. They make the rules on how the primaries work. So, changing the rules for them would take making them do it, which would never happen. We'd have to burn DC down to the ground first.

I mean, if you want to get down to it, the republicans played their primary pretty fair in 2016, and they nominated Trump. The Democrats made a farce of their primaries, working behind the scenes against Sanders.

Coming back to reality here, though. We still got shitty outcomes from the primaries, regardless. We can't even have sane politics if we can't agree on what is real and what isn't. Before we can even address partisan primaries, we have to get to the basics. We are suffering from a corruption media and money in politics that's been poisoning us for decades.

Is there even a national libertarian party, or did they just run with the title because they couldn't win the GOP primaries?

Funny you mention this. I just listened to Jon Stewart’s podcast today with a presidential historian guest and they came to the same conclusions. Plus, a six week election cycle max.
