Is that kosher?

as long as you maintain eye contact and appear genuinely pleased to meet them, i say do it.

I'm rather old fashioned about this issue. I don't think you're a nancy if your handshake sucks, but I admit that my dispositon toward you becomes somewhat distrustful.

I just think that if you can't shake my hand AND look me in the eyes when you do it, I'm not really gonna trust you.

There is no intrinsic value in the act of shaking hands, it's a socialized significance and I think it's still very relevant in our culture. This is a definite must in the business world. I would never not shake one of my client's hands, or a vendor for that matter. It's just plain respectful and normative to do so.

As far as ladies are concerned...I find that most women appreciate a handhsake and the firm (but not breaking) handshake is also something most women appreciate, in my experience.

I say handshakes are good.

Lighten up there, Francis.

I never extend my hand to a woman and i am a woman. If you bear hug me i'll knee you in the nuts. I say bear hug = bad space invading bear.

Constantly, even if there's no one around.

I always give people I'm meeting for the first time a limp-wristed, barely-holding on, wet-noodle shake with my right hand. After I've flopped their arm a couple of times, I tighten my grip on their hand and start punching them square in the face over and over again with my left hand. Children and women seem to love this.

I kid! I shake someone's hand when I'm introduced to them, or I'm meeting them for the first time ever, or even if I know them and haven't seen them in a long time. Even girls. I thought it was polite to do this.
