Playing drums and singing at the same time

tim alexander on the second album by the band laundry sang and played drums
the guy from the romantics (what i like about you)
this band "uninvited" from memphis, they all sang kinda equally, often at the same time -- not harmony, more like three jello biafras or something
the band "stay fucked" the drummer yells into a headset (doesn't really count, but it's most of their vocals)
snack truck's drummer does some goofy blubbering and screaming and good drumming.
the drummer from bleach, the japanese band, sings. all three members sing pretty equally and they can all sing pretty well. the bass player has a really piercing scream. she also does the fancy slap thing, imo to good effect.

but the best is ruins! yoshida's voice is awesome crazy!

oh, and i saw some guy on a 70s pop infomercial singing while playing a 16th note hihat beat at a kinda brisk tempo. hadn't seen that before, too bad it was crap.

speaking of headsets... there's this guy who sings and plays guitar at a spanish restuarant my ex-girlfriend and i would go to nearly every weekend for brunch, and he wore one of those things. he used to smile and wink at my little lady every time we came in there, but the day i noticed his headset i started calling him "Senior Headset" and that was that.

"Hola, Senior Headset!"

i think it depends completely on what kind of music the band plays and the drumming style of the drummer. i personally don't think i could do it very well without compromising my drumming, aside from maybe a few lighter pop songs that don;t require much physical effort or concentration. but, i admire any drummer who can rock the drumming AND singing!

doesn't janet bean from eleventh dream day play drums and sing at the same time?? they are performing next weekend so i guess i'll find out!

the drummer from 'shotmaker' also used to sing and drum. his drum lines were heavy as hell, but not too complex. he sang/yelled and held down the tempo like it was riveted to the stage. good stuff.

i used to do background yelling stuff and drum as well. my tempo was all over the place at the time. it was the first time singing while drumming, and the drumming wasn't reflex just yet.

using a boom mic was tough, since you need to keep your head pretty still when singing. i tend to flail when i drum, so i had to change how i played when the vocal parts came up. i think that's most of the reasons for f'n up the tempo. but, i couldn't rock a headset.

i always wanted to get a military pilot's helmet and modify the microphone so that it could work as a singing mic. it would be hot as hell, but hilarious. or else mount a SM58 into the facemask of a football helmet or something.
