They do have that whole windchill thing... Chicago is roughly of average wind. Casper, Wyoming is the real windy city. The name "the windy city" is a reference to politicans circa the World's Fair making such a fuss about what a great town it is, they were "full of hot air". The name actually has nothing to do with wind.

But hell yeah, it does get cold here. If Philly is too cold to begin with, you probably couldn't handle Chicago.

pretzel thread turned into a philly food thread.

I have a love hate thing with this city. I won't dwell on the hate, but the love:

sports being the preeminent culture here.
the way people say "roof" and "water."
cheap (relatively)
close to nyc (relatively)
you can have a car easily and they only ticket you if you deserve it.
all of duchamp's real work.
rocky (first one, fuck the sequels)
democratic pro-union city

okay some minimal hate:

too many fucking murders
trash everywhere
most jobs are outside the city
public transportation being starved by the state

This is not true unless you hang out there all the time and lets face it hanging out on south street all the time is not fun.

"Wuh-der."

I've never been there, but used to be very close to a Philadelphian. She didn't have much of an accent, but her parents' were rather thick.

She enjoyed scoffing to the contrary every time she heard Philly called the "City of Brotherly Love", and made sport of complaining that the only reason people recognized the Philadelphia Museum of Art was because of the famous Rocky scene. She was an Eagles & Phillies fan, but we both enjoyed jeering the Flyers.

Beautiful parkways there! Who planned them, Olmstead? I'll have to check Wikipedia.

I've only been there a few times, and had a nice time each time. The least likely one was when I went to a Mumia Abu-Jamal rally in 1999 in the neighborhood of the Fraternal Order of Police building, which was not a very nice neighborhood, at that time anyway, and I actually had a really fine time--I got sick of the histrionics of the rally crowd, so I took my sign and walked away a couple of blocks and stood at stop lights and struck up conversations with people from the neighborhood. Most everybody was super pleasant to me. I am sure if I'd gone at night, it wouldn't have been quite as nice of a time.

I guess that next summer, a ton of buildings in that neighborhood were collapsing from neglect and long-term problems with humidity, and that bummed me out. Take care of your neighborhoods, Philadelphia.

Other than that, my friend Brendan's apartment was featured in some NY Times article on the Move To Philly "movement," which I thought was pretty neat.

And I was a fan of Sound Collector and am of Arthur mag, so I guess I am pro-Laris Kreslins, who is in Philly.

And wasn't some sweet Siltbreeze band from Philly?

okay more to love:

1. excellent local berrs

2. cool 18th century architecture everywhere.

3. thomas paine lived here

4. ben franklin lived here

5. the constitution was signed into law here

6. the first gangster rap song came from philly (psk what does that mean?)

7. broad street bullies (yes, clarke's rep has tarnished but in the 70's he was the man. ever see the vid of him taking a slap shot to the head and shrug it off like it was nothing while blood pours from his head?)

8. DR. J (sorry chi-town, so much cooler than jordan or any other nba constructed marketing robot) plus the original backboard breaker - darrell dawkins.

wha??? not many teams have had as much success as the flyers. unless you are a devils fan.

we've been robbed so badly.

every sports fan has a gripe (bartman), but really nothing beats the crime the nba pulled when they gave the lakers the title. the sixers totally destroyed the lakers in game one, despite the constant uncalled fouls on iverson and at least called a few fouls against that charlatan nba marketing construction shaq.

after that, the nba decided that they needed to step in and save the rapist and shaq and allowed shaq to get away with everything. that moment was like the mlb strike. they had killed the goose.

Aw, man! Am I banned from Philly, or from this thread, now?

First the Dolly Madison dessert factory, and now this. It's not my fault I think worms are delicious. Sucka can't get a break.

anyone with enough balls to move away from the crowd with a free mumia sign, is a philly person.

I don't know enough about the mumia thing to say anything about it. all I know is that some people here have very strong feelings about it.
