I used to take guitar lessons from Duane and he once told me that a musician's playing style and sound ought to be the main influence on what instrument he chooses, and the most expensive gear is not necessarily the best for what you want to do. After all, you're going to be playing the guitar, not the price tag.
As an example, he pointed out that Dave Sims plays a cheap bass but plays the hell out of it and creates a unique sound that he likes, so it's the right instrument for him.

22does anybody else read all these "jesus lizard sound" threads and long for the day when everybody's trying to find their own tone? eesh!!
FYI, if you're looking for Blacky's old Voivod bass sound, the secret is to play through two JMP 100W Super Lead amps, with the volumes on 7 or 8, into four 15" speakers.

i figure the reason for the hunt is the same as mine: you attain these things and use them as a jumping off point. just like any influence, you take it and you push the boundaries.
for my own sound i think i took a lot from dave, bob, and lemmy.

24Maybe as bass players what draws us to the JL sound is the clarity, you can here the bass so damn good! Its not the sheer volume, its the clear precise prescence of the bass guitar that I like. Not to mention Sims is a brilliant player.

it's all of that.
i think my favorite bassists have always been audible not just felt. tracey pew, lemmy, bootsy (with james brown) sims, joe lally, barry adamson, jj burnell, john entwistle, john paul jones, bob weston, dave riley, jeff pezatti, graham lewis, jah wobble.
i think those guys were always heard, whether or not you're paying attention is another thing. that's what i always like about them. they weren't just felt, they were heard, and what you heard was awesome.
