Naked Raygun- Jettison

Most of the album sounds extremely thin and weak, with little or no bass.
And if you try to turn the bass up, Eric Spicer's toms start to distort your speakers.
It ruins the listening experience.

That album has your typical expensive and 'polished' rock sound (which I can't stand in a punk band).

I know its trite, but this really is one of the best recordings I've ever heard. I think it's quieter on the whole, but all the levels are incredibly proportionate, to me. It sounds like they're playing in your living room, not in some studio somewhere and not out of some loud-assed PA.

Tweez sounds like a pile of shit, to me. Whats with the guitars?

They were young as hell, though. Hearing Steve's earlier recordings sortof give me hope in an "everyone sucked at one time" sort of way.

June of 44 - Bob talks about the dreaded "basketball" sound from kick drums, and gets it on "Tropics and Meridians" pretty bad. I hate the way the drums sound on "Four Great Points", for some reason, I can't put my finger on it.


I've been waiting to come across a thread like this for a while. I am really picky lately when I buy new albums, but never about the music itself, its dumb bullshit like "the cymbals are ducking too much with the kick!" and "somebody did a bad gating job" - stuff that I can't complain to my friends about because they'd have no idea what I'm talking about.

Good to know I'm not the only geeky asshole out there.

I agree. Uber-kudos to Brian Paulson for the most suitable engineering I can imagine for those songs.

Probably intentional.

Turn up your stereo for the quiet parts and the loud parts are much more loud and dramatic. Modern mastering seems to take away this fun, as well as everything gets louder and eveny out by some kind of unspoken modern template.

When I was mixing at clubs I would put Spiderland on between bands, especially for weak cover bands. Seeing drunk girls turn toward the PA with inquisitive looks on their faces was fun.
