Everything I've heard since the first track someone played for me has been kind of disappointing. So not crap, with a moderate waffle factor at least.

Braun (the drummer) was in Today is The Day for a short while - he plays only on In The Eys of God. Athough Mastadon are not, in my opinion, the brilliance they've been hailed to be, I think they are an important staple. They have talent and creativity, and I've never turned down an opportunity to see them.
Tallahassee opening for Eye Hate God (I was honestly more impressed with Keelhaul), Atlanta twice, The Relapse Fest in Philadelphia and incidentally, when I went to see Shellac at the Wiffleball tournament in Athens (cancelled), I was able to drown my sorrows that night at a Mastadon show in some trashed old student house "space."
I don't really know the rest of the guys except Braun but he's a good guy, so I'm gonna trash the waffles and just say solid not crap.
Congratulations Mastadon!
You deserve it.

Not Crap
No waffle factor
I've seen these guys 4 times. and I have not been disappointed. I'm pretty fired up to see a band with that amount of talent gain some exposure.
Rock on Mastodon

Saw Mastodon last night in Worcester MA. A terribly depressing town, but a superb gig. They are very talented musicians and there was a definite melt/slay effect on my face.

BTW, the other night on Conan O'Brien, he asked Max Weinberg what he had done at the weekend.
Max said he had brought his son to Ozzfest, and Conan asked him what bands he enjoyed at it. Max listed Mastodon first.
Cool points for Mr. Weinberg for that.
