not crap - for badmotorfinger alone. superunknown also gets a not crap from me, but 4/5 for "spoonman". man i hate that song, so bad.

but soundgarden is good.

Of the bands from this era that first got me into music, Soundgarden's records have aged quite a bit. Not as bad as Alice in Chains though.

But I will always have a soft spot for Soundgarden, as they were my first concert in 1994, when I was in the sixth grade. My mom drove my best friend and I 90 miles to the Spokane Arena. I saw real moshing. And people smoking pot. And Tad. After experiencing rock music for a year and a half through cassettes and MTV, it was a pretty awesome exprience.

Best of all? My mom fell asleep during Soundgarden's set.

I am sincerely glad that so many of you found a way from the innocent ignorance of youth to the hallowed adult world of damn good music, but the mere fact that Soundgarden served as the bridge between says nothing whatsoever about the quslity of that band's music, which--it goes without saying--is crap.

I mean, I had a very talented student once who got turned on to poetry by Jewel's book of verse. Does this make Jewel a good poet? No, it does not. And a diseased hooker might serve as one's initiation into the world of sexual pleasure, but there's no need to look back years later and try to convince oneself that s/he was beautiful.

Wax nostalgic all you want, folks, but let's be real. We liked a band so much at twelve or fourteen that, despite our changing tastes, we still like listening to it from time to time for sentimental reasons. That's nothing to be ashamed of. But don't sell out your matured aesthetic sense just to rationalize a periodic walk on the crap side.

If it goes without saying, then why do i disagree with this?

They're good for some nostalgic reflection; I recall when they broke driving around Tahoe in a jeep with house speakers blasiting 'hands all over.' that was quite fun, though it resulted in zero chick action. I have lost all my Soundgarden tapes and albums and feel no need to replace them. Stellar then, crap now. Growing old sucks.

yeah, i fucking loved Badmotorfinger and Superunknown in high school when i liked a bunch of other stuff that was crap...that stuff's bad but their earlier stuff is EVEN WORSE...no band should shriek that much...there is nothing worthwhile about this band...i'll say it again: CRAP!

I am not at all familiar with "the later material".

My younger brother will occasionally enjoy spinning Badmotorfinger and proceeding to rock out. As far as I am concerned, this makes the record, if not all of Soundgarden definitely Not Crap.

When it comes to the Seattle early '90s grunge explosion guys, I would have to rank them pretty near the bottom of the barrel. I would even rate questionable bands like Alice in Chains well above them.

Badmotorfinger wasn't so horrible, a bit dull and faceless perhaps, but not cringe-inducing.

But when Superunknown came out and we started getting relentlessly pelted by this Spoonman and Blackhole Sun shit, that's when my mind was made up that they were CRAP.

I was so glad when they broke up.
