Best Indie Band Ever...

I didn't know that at all. So "indie" isn't short for "independent" over there? Is the British definition of "indie" similar to the US definition of "Brit-pop"? ...Meaning something along the lines of "garbage alterna-pop music made by whiny tossers who have an obnoxious obsession with their haircuts, clothes, and shoes"?

Wait, did I use the word "tossers" right? :)

It's still 'independent' music (although the accuracy of such a tag is questionable when you consider who all these labels are in the pay of), and your description is pretty accurate, but I think it also refers to a sound too. The Brit-pop sound you refer to, yup, it was quintessentially 'indie'. It's ironic because, as I've already mentioned, many of these 'indie' acts are on at the very least subsidiaries of major labels.

no Elastica in that shit-list?

no Stone Roses (the only good UK indie band i can think of. no, wait a minute, there are many other good indie bands in the UK, but this one got very big in their time)?

no Suede?

no Gene?

NME-created Brit-Pop was shit.

but at least the NME was a good music magazine. yes, it was sensationalistic, gossipy and so on, but the quality of the writing was amazing.

now it's turned into the worst magazine ever. so sad.

just to clarify
that list was a bit "tongue-in-cheek" cause i knew most people on here would hate them
i do like all them bands but i dont consider them to be the best indie bands ever. my real list would be:

1. Pulp
2. Stone Roses
3. Super Furry Animals

best indie albums of all time:

1. Different Class
2. Dog Man Star
3. Stone Roses
I think you're all fucked in the head. We're ten hours from the fucking fun park and you want to bail out. Well I'll tell you something. This is no longer a vacation. It's a quest. It's a quest for fun.

This poll should be voted for on a basis of fun. Fuck it. Of all those people, the most honest and genuinely good hearted with their music are Cast. I'm not sure if they were an independent band at any point, but they were happy and wanted to make you happy. I will vote for Cast as 'the best indie band in the world!' Hurray!

Somehow i was hoping that the Brits refered to Britpop as "pop." Ya know, like the whole "What do Canadians call Canadian Bacon?" dilemma.

Do British people refer to American pop bands as "Yankpop?" I hope so...it sounds dirty.
